This client wanted to register new armory that would be easier to depict on his round shield - he didn't want to take liberties with his registered design to make it fit. The straight chief was not translating well onto his round shield, and he wanted something that would take into account the edge. A bordure will follow the edge of whatever shape it is depicted on (as would an orle, but he liked the outer edge for his design.)
His original device: Or, a gurges gules and on a chief sable three barley sheaves Or.
His new device: Or, a gurges gules and on a bordure sable nine sheaves of barley Or.
His new design as rendered on his round shield. Keep in mind that bordures did not have to be as beefy as in the submission depiction - some were quite narrow in period.
His new design may face some discussion regarding the depiction of the barley sheaves, but the design was approved for his original device so it would be grandfathered to him for further submissions. I'll be watching for it to hit the LoaR in perhaps November 2014 (after the Pennsic submissions clear.)
His shield work was used as an example for another client to see how heraldry adapts to everyday use.
