I met him at the vast and rather crass 99 cents store on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood right next to Safari Sam's nightclub, where I was heading to take headshots of Amy O'Neill. As it was a sundrenched and thirsty day I was in seach of something wet to sip and 99 cents was exactly the price I was ready to pay. As always I had my camera slung over my shoulder - "the movement you need is on your shoulder" as Beatle Paul wrote long ago- and I was ready to take any photos that yelled out to me that they needed to be taken. And there was Officer Gus, his big hat slipping down over his eyes - a hat that seemed too big for his head - hunched over a grocery cart like a man punched in the gut. I went up to him and requested his photo, and without saying yes, he stood up suddenly at attention, and stared at me like an arrested man having his mug-shot taken before being dumped in jail for the night. Many people noticed me taking his picture and watched with interest. I took two, and thanked him, and he looked like he had done his duty, done what he was told, following instructions, and slumped back under his big hat over his grocery cart of 99 cent merchandise.

The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail: A Play
A reissue of a now classic American drama.

If the law is of such a nature that it requires you to be an agent of injustice to another, then I say, break the law." So wrote the young Henry David Thoreau in 1849. Three years earlier, Thoreau had put his belief into action and refused to pay taxes because of the United States government's involvement in the Mexican War, which Thoreau firmly believed was unjust. For his daring and unprecedented act of protest, he was thrown in jail. The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail is a celebrated dramatic presentation of this famous act of civil disobedience and its consequences. Its poignant, lively, and accessible scenes offer a compelling exploration of Thoreau's philosophy and life.
