Fishing Safaris in Zambia with John du Plooy

Fishing safaris are conducted on the Zambezi River, in the heart of the western flood plains known as the Kingdom of Barotseland. During peak flooding (November to April) 16 million cubic metres of water, abound with hippo, crocodile, waterbirds and the world famous tigerfish fill the plains. Many world and personal records have been set and broken within these waters for both the tigerfish and the many variety of bream also caught here.

The attraction of this beautiful and remote region is not limited to the exciting fishing or the large and varied

quanitiy of bird life.
Steeped in history and tradition, the story of the conquering Lozi people (who originated from Zaire) starts in the 17th Century. They in turn were conquered by the Kololo tribe, whose language they retained. The Lozi throne was restored when the Lozi rose and massacred every Kololo man, woman and child during a single night. The Ku'omboka ceremony, predating recorded Zambian history, is the main Barotseland cultural event held annually in March or April. It is the journey of the paramount chief (The Litunga, a highly respected chosen member of the royal family) from the dry season residence to the higher ground wet season residence. Not everyone is fortuante enough to be able to witness this amazing ceremony, but a visit to a local village will provide a wealth of insight to the traditional way of life that has altered little in the passing years.
