MATHEMATICS TRAINING TO
UNDERGRADUATE STATISTICS STUDENTS
(FUNDED BY NATIONAL BOARD FOR HIGHER MATHEMATICS)
Department of Statistics, University of Calcutta is organizing the inaugural Mathematics Training for Undergraduate Statistics Students Programme (MTUSS 2016) during October 17-28, 2016. The programme is modelled after the highly successful Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) Programme held every summer in different centres of the country since 1993 with financial support from the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM).
The impact of MTTS on participants and the appreciation it has received from them over the years has highlighted the desirability of such programmes designed specifically for the benefit of students of other Mathematical subjects, in particular Statistics. The MTUSS 2016 programme has been designed with this objective in mind.
The aim of the programme is to impart an intensive training in selected topics of basic undergraduate Mathematics, that are essential for in-depth understanding of several fundamental concepts of Statistics. An added incentive for students to participate would be to discover the excitement of independent analytical thinking. We emphasize, however, that the purpose of the programme is not to train students with a view to clearing any admission tests, but to equip them with the mathematical background necessary to appreciate Statistical theory better.
