A webcam on your laptop / desktop is necessary for the Respondus Monitoring software to work. No particular type of webcam is required. Make sure you order this at the beginning of the semester so that it arrives in time for the first assignment. If you do not own a webcam already it is recommended that you buy one immediately. There is currently a shortage and it may take 2 weeks or more for it to be delivered.
With this being an online class, a decent internet connection is crucial. All students are expected to plan accordingly should they experience an internet outage and have an alternate location with reliable internet available.
WeBWorK Homework will be done online at http://www.math.msu.edu/webwork. For information on cost, payment due date, etc. please visit http://www.math.msu.edu/webwork.
For more information about the WeBWorK please go here.
For this class we will use the Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitoring software to ensure that students have a level playing field on quizzes and exams. There will be a practice quiz in D2L that uses the Respondus system so you can practice and download the browser ahead of the proctored assignment.
When submitting fill-in-the-blank style questions in D2L it only understands decimals. The browser does have a built in calculator but it takes some practice to learn the syntax.
A TI83, TI83+, TI84 or TI84+ is recommended. Each student bears sole responsibility to develop adequate proficiency with his/her graphing calculator. I recommend buying a used model on Amazon or elsewhere.
NOTE: Some calculating devices are not appropriate for this course. The use of cell phones, or any other electronic device in the classroom is specifically prohibited. All devices which can perform algebraic symbol manipulation ('computer algebra') are prohibited. Currently, the use of at least the following devices on any graded exercise is prohibited: Texas Instruments models TI89, TI-Nspire CX CAS, Voyage 200, TI92 & TI92-plus calculators; Hewlett Packards model HP49G, HP49G+, and HP50G; Casio's algefx2.0 & algefx2.0pls; and all handheld, palmtop, laptop, and wi-fi enabled devices.
The TI-Nspire CX CAS is not allowed however the TI-Nspire CX is allowed.
If you are uncertain about your calculator it is your responsibility to ask your instructor well before the first exam. Any graded exercise completed using a prohibited device will receive an automatic zero.
Fill in the blank PDFs will be provided for our class notes. Many students find it very useful to print these out prior to watching the videos / attending class.
No textbook is required for participation in the class but we highly recommend having access to the textbook. The department has developed course notes and course videos to assist students in their learning.
