Mount Elba was built in 1809 by Temple Walker. Temple was born December 5, 1790 at Locust Grove and died December 27, 1868 at Mount Elba. He was the son of Major Humphrey B. Walker who was born January 13, 1762 at Locust Grove and died December 26, 1820 in Richmond while attending the Virginia Assembly. His mother was Frances Temple born 1760 at Chatham Hill in King and Queen County, and died February 9, 1824 at Locust Grove. He was the grandson of Baylor D. Walker born November 28th, 1737 at Rye Field and died April 7, 1773 at Locust Grove, the new name for Rye Field. Temple was the great grandson of John B. Walker, born April 29, 1711, and the great great grandson of Captain Thomas B. Walker (1689 to 1723) and Susanah Peachey. Temple was the great great great grandson of John Walker who married Rachel Crowshaw on September 30, 1692. Rachael was the granddaughter of Raleigh Crowshaw who arrived at Jamestown on a supply ship in 1608.
Temple was 19 years old and built the home for his bride, Mary Hill. He built the home with three floors. The dining room was in the basement. The second floor was the living room and the top floor held two bedrooms and a hallway. The kitchen was in the back of the house as a separate building. The laundry and privy were outside. Temple built the entire house and all the outside buildings for $500.00, however, it took him five years to get to the court house for the permits.
This is the earliest photo of Mount Elba. We believe it was taken about 1910. Atwood, Louise, and Annie are standing in the yard. Ellen is seated on the porch.
