Installing ActivInspire Software

The following are the directions on how to install the ActivInspire software that runs our Promethean boards and other Promethean accessories.

The district suggests doing installations in the following order

  1. Driver (Steps 1-1.10)
  2. Program (Steps 2-4.9)
  3. Subjects (Steps 5-5.7

The final set of steps (6-6.11) are for running the ocassional updates within the app itself.

1. Running the ActivDriver File (MUST for pens to work)

In order for the pens to work, you will need to install the ActivDriver also--it is no longer included as part of the main installation.

You will see different status messages as it runs and the bar will begin to fill up as it continues with the installation.

1.9 Click "Finish" to close the ActivDriver Setup Wizard.

1.10 Click "Yes" to restart your computer NOW or finish other installations and restart afterwards.

If you need to, you may click "no" and restart later.  It's probably best to finish the other installations first.

However, your Promethean/ActivInspire software and pens may not work until after the restart.

2. Locate the Installation File

I would suggest glancing through all steps before beginning.  This program is easy to install, but it takes you through many windows.  If you look through this first, you'll know what to expect and will be able to proceed through the steps quickly.

 

  1. Go to the "Topeka Public Schools Delivered Applications" Launcher.  This usually displays on your desktop after starting up your computer.
  2. DOUBLE-click the "Promethean Board Setup" icon.

Click "Next" to begin using the Install Wizard.

  1. Leave the default to "Full Install".

This part of the process will take a couple of minutes.  Be patient.

Click "Finish".  You must still proceed to the next step to install the subject packs and enter the licensing information.

This is where you will begin entering the licensing information.

  1. Enter "USD 501" for the User name
  2. Enter "USD 501" for the Organization name
  3. Enter the 16-digit activation key from your board.  This can be found in 1 of 2 locations on your Promethean Board.  It could be listed on a small white labeling strip attached to your board.  It also might be engraved on the grey bezel around the board--usually in the middle of the right side.
  4. Click "I accept the terms of this license.  Please make sure that you click this AFTER entering the information from sub-steps 1-3.  Otherwise, the "okay" button may not be selectable.
  5. Click "OK".  DO NOT select "personal edition", "upgrade now" or "60 day trial".

  1. Most teachers should select "Promethean ActivStudio".  Early primary teachers may choose to use the application in it's "Promethean ActivPrimary" look.  This can be changed later if desired.  You'll need to be in "ActivStudio" when creating flipcharts.

At this point, it's okay to go ahead ahead and close the Dashboard when it appears.  All options will be available later via the applications menus.

You should see this box appear (possibly hiding behind the "Dashboard" in the above screenshot).  Choose "shared resources" for the location.  This allows the resources to be available for all users on your computer instead of installing duplicate copies for each user.

It must index the resource library for them to be searchable.  DO NOT interrupt this process.

6. UPDATES--THE REST OF THE DIRECTIONS DESCRIBE RUNNING UPDATES--THIS CAN BE DONE LATER IF NEED BE.

Many of these steps will be identical to some of the steps during the initial installation.

  1. Click the "Help" menu
  2. Choose "check for updates".  If it shows updates available (will usually have the first time after installing the application from the district launcher), you will need to complete the rest of these steps.

This will show up because the ActivInspire application is still open.  It has to close the application before it can complete the installation process.

Click "Finish".

Your ActivInspire software is now ready to use.  There should be a shortcut on your desktop.  Double-click this to launch the application.
