As we start the new school year students in the Resource Room will use the first few classes to review their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and their accommodations. Each student will be asked to fill out a questionnaire identifying their strengths, needs, personal hopes & goals and a study skills checklist which they will reference to write a letter to their teachers describing themselves, their learning needs and hopes, as well as the accommodations they find most helpful. Teachers report that these letters help personalize the special education accommodations they receive the first week of school. This process also serves to help students develop the self advocacy skills they will need in a postsecondary environment. Depending on individual IEP goals, some students will also engage in informal evaluation activities before beginning more formal instruction to meet their reading and writing IEP goals.
