SWIC - Success With Integrated Curriculum, Support Studies Social Studies

     Welcome, students and parents to my website.  Here you will find information about my Advisory and the Social Studies Literacy courses.  We continue block scheduling for the 2015-2016 school year, an opportunity that allows for expanded periods of instruction and learning. Students will experience Advisory time alternating daily with an academic support time (AST) at the end of the day.
     I am available to students and parents for conferences, to support academic achievement and social success during Red period 1, AST, and before and after school with prior arrangement.  Students, please make sure that you speak directly to me about your concerns or any difficulties you may experience. There are always ways to resolve problems with thought and effort. Parents, please use the contact information provided below. I will respond to your questions and concerns as soon as is possible.  I am looking forward to an amazing year of exploration, discovery, learning, and achievement. SWIC Program
Description
  • SWIC is a self-contained program within the Special Services Department at Mt. Ararat High School. 
  • SWIC teachers use a team approach to provide instruction in the areas of English/Language Arts, Mathematics, and Support Studies

  • Social Studies classes are team taught by Ms. Smith and a regular education Social Studies teacher in mainstream setting. 
  • SWIC students require direct instruction due to the identification of Learning Disabilities. 
  • SWIC Support Study class is a credit course. Students receive needed assistance in order to complete class work for their SWIC and regular education classes.




Class Expectations

As a student you will:
  • Have consistent attendance.
  • Be on time, in the classroom and seated before the bell.
  • Make your best effort.
  • Ask for help when needed.
  • Show respect for others their ideas, property, and the right to learn in a supportive environment free of distractions.
  • Request missed work immediately upon returning to class from an absence.
  • Maintain an organized notebook containing current work, returned graded assignments, and resource information.

Required materials:
  • 3 Ring Binder 1 1/2 inch or larger with divider
  • Economics/Amer.Foreign Affairs (RED binder)
  • United States History (BLACK binder)
  • Pencil or pen (black or blue only)
  • Highlighter   
  • A positive attitude and perseverance           


Grading

SWIC Support Studies
Learning will be assessed by:

Habits of Work (HOW) in the areas of Prepares for Class; Engages in Class; Demonstrates Effort and Perseverance; and Conducts Self Responsibly.
