Our current science unit is space!  into a study of space after a special guest speaker sparked their interest. On Wednesday, January 4, 2012 graduate aerospace engineering student from the University of Illinois, Kevin Hart, spoke to fourth graders about what it would be like
to journey into space.
Hart took students on a journey through the galaxy. Beginning with the time it would take to walk to a car, all the way to how long it would take to get to the nearest star, students were able to see how big space really is.
Currently, Hart is working on research at the University of Illinois involving structural materials that heal themselves without human intervention. The goal is that someday these materials will allow aircrafts and other devices that are difficult to repair to last longer. Hart said that his own interest in science began at a young age and that he hopes to encourage students to pursue interests in the fields of math
and science.

In this picture students listen as Hart explains the time it would take to get to one of the planets in our solar system.

Here is a video that the 4th grade classes taped in order to thank the scientist at the University of Illinois who donated materials for a lab and wrote letters to the students.  Thank you self-healing scientists!
