The Evolution of Tragedy

This unit will allow us to consider the connections between the epic hero and its tragic counterpart.  We will begin by studying literary theory surrounding the tragedy from Aristotle's Poetics, then delve into one of the quintessential tragedies of the ancient world:  Sophocles' Oedipus Rex.  We will then, in the next unit, fast forward two millennia and across Europe to Shakespeare's England as we study how the concept of tragedy has evolved by the time of the creation of Julius Caesar.
