The Hero's Journey

This unit will help us begin to define archetypes in world literature:  that is, patterns in storytelling that have emerged and flourished around the world.  We will examine such archetypes as the shipwreck story, the epic hero, and the epic quest, among other things, as we study some of the oldest literature in existence, The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Indian epic The Ramayana, along with Hesse's Siddhartha, all in an attempt to understand the history of writing, where archetypes come from, and how authors can use archetypes to create meaning for their audiences.
