Literature from the African Diaspora

This unit will allow us to study some of the roots of African-American Literature and understand connections between African-American Literature and the African diaspora. We will begin by studying the role of the griot, the oral historian who had the immense power of remembering and retelling the culture and history of many regions on the African continent. We will read about the Malian king Sundiata in an epic that bears his namesake as we study the strong cultures of Africa, past and present. We will also examine contemporary African and Caribbean cultures through their literature in an effort to compare these ideas to those present in the chronology of African-American literature.
