Dear Parents/Guardians and Student:

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the start of a brand new school year and also, to 9th grade Regents Living Environment! This year is going to be filled with exciting, hands-on exploration into the exciting world of science.  In order for this year to run smoothly and end with success on the regents, it is important that you understand my expectations for this year.

Living Environment is a Regents course that consists of studying life from its smallest parts, THE CELL, to the largest part, THE ENVIRONMENT.  In between we will study GENETICS, EVOLUTION, THE HUMAN BODY, and HUMAN/ANIMAL/PLANT POPULATIONS.  In June, at the end of the course, students will take the regents exam which they need in order to graduate high school!

The Scholar-Activist Contract provides us with an understanding of the work habits that are expected at UA-BSSWA, however, these habits are also expected in our science classroom. Please come to class on time, and prepared with your materials and an open mind ready to learn.  This science class is dependent on a classroom where we respect each other, ourselves, and our surroundings.  When working in groups, and as a class, we understand how important it is to cooperate with one another and help each other along the way.  We will have fun and exciting class periods, and in doing so we will focus and think critically, ask questions, and activly partipate. Most importantly, please remember that every day is new and everyone starts each new day with a clean slate!

We will complete about 40 labs that will be graded. Students MUST have a minimum of 1200 minutes of laboratory experiences with completed lab reports to take the Regents exam. Students who do not fulfill the laboratory requirements will not be able to take the Regents exam in June!  Attendance to Living Environment laboratory sessions are mandatory.  Daily attendance is extremely important to make sure all labortory experiences are complete.  I must receive within 5 days of being assigned for full credit. Corrections can be made during the marking period for a 65%. After the marking period the lab is due, corrections can still be made, but only for regents eligibility.

REQUIRED DAILY MATERIALS:                                            Suggested Materials:

One 3-Ring Binders (1 ½ - 2 inch)                                    Folder

3-Hole Punched Looseleaf Paper                                    Highlighter

Pencils & Pens                                                                    Index Cards

A complete and organized binder is essential to your success. The NYS Regents exam and the Living Environment final exam tests a whole year worth of material. You must have your binder and notes with you every day!

Quizzes are announced at least one day in advance, except notebook checks (the whole idea is to check that students are keeping a complete and organized binder.)

Tests will be announced a week ahead of time so that you may plan study time accordingly in the event of athletic contests, personal commitments, etc.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you have questions or need help. If you do not feel comfortable during class, please see me after class.  If you would like one on one or small group extra help, please schedule a time to either see me before or after school!  Also, please become familiar with the course website:

I truly look forward to meeting and getting to know this year’s new 9th grade class! If you have any questions or concerns, please, do not hesitate to contact me.  I can be reached at the school (718-893-5158) or by e-mail at

Thank you,

 Ms. Jen
