The best part of this week

Many of the new classroom management techniques I discussed or found with the help of my CT and my University Supervisor have helped. Including, telling students “I need your pencils down and your eyes up here.” Then waiting for 100% compliance before proceeding. Also, not talking or asking questions until it’s quiet. Staring at students who remain talking or off task until they are focused, and calling students out as needed when they speak out of turn, interrupt, or talk across the classroom with, “We’re speaking one at a time, when called on” and “I’ll take a hand” or my using cards for every question. We’ve even set up points for being in their seats and ready to go at the bell. I’ve been much more strict with 5th period, which has really helped squash some major issues I was having with a few students’ behavior; but I also have to learn to balance opening the class up to important conversations. This has been a challenge and a great learning experience for me and my growth as a teacher.

Biggest challenge this week

My strictness for 5th period had become part of my teaching style in general. I was acting more strict in 3rd period as well. My third period class has the opposite problem of 5th. They are too quiet and it’s hard to engage them deeply due to their shyness—as a class. So, I need to learn to balance my teaching style depending on my class and not treat all classes the same. I wasn’t intentionally doing that; however, I’m grateful for these classroom management issues so that I can become a better teacher overall.

Next week

I have a lot to learn about teaching persuasive writing. I’m writing the upcoming schedules and researching, finding, and creating and the materials I need for next week and the remainder of the persuasion lessons.
