Welcome to Instrumental Music at Thunder Hill Elementary!
The instrumental music program is comprised of students who choose either a band or a string instrument and participate for the FULL school year on that instrument. Band and orchestra students perform two formal concerts during the school year to demonstrate the culmination of their knowledge. Students are expected to attend and participate in both concerts as part of the requirements of the instrumental music program.
The THES Strings program is open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who choose to participate. The THES Band program is open to 4th and 5th graders who choose to participate. All students will have 60 minutes of instrumental music instruction a week, with some weeks allowing for extra rehearsals or sectional times. The schedule will rotate so that students are not missing the same subject or class every time they attend instrumental music. Second and third year students will have the opportunity to participate at the Howard County Solo and Ensemble Festival in the spring!
Music is a discipline that requires commitment. This commitment means that students will be required to attend all music classes (and make up missed classwork), perform in the winter and spring concerts, and to practice at least 15 minutes, 5 times a week at home as part of their grade. Correct daily practice is absolutely essential. Please evaluate your child’s schedule and be certain that learning to play a musical instrument will be enough of a priority to ensure success.
