5th Grade Curriculum

Trimester TWO
The second trimester is spent teaching comprehension and vocabulary strategies to meet our goals.  During the second trimester we assess the following standards from the Iowa and Common Core:
Reading:
Employs research-based reading strategies (asking questions)
Determines theme, main idea, and summarizes text
Explains how an author develops the point of view or purpose of text
Reads with sufficient accuracy and fluency
Determines the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in ext
Writing:
Develop clear and coherent writing
Writes on demand using grade-level skills and strategies
Edits and publishes own writing using an editing checklist or set of rules
Social Studies:
Identifies the components of geography
Demonstrates the rights and responsibilities of good citizenship
Understand current social issues to form opinions and responses

Standards are assessed using a 3 point rubric: 
Meets the standard 3, Partially meets the standard 2 and Does not meet the standard 1.

Reads with sufficient accuracy and fluency
Determines the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in ext
Writing:
Develop clear and coherent writing
Writes on demand using grade-level skills and strategies
Edits and publishes own writing using an editing checklist or set of rules
Generates a narrative to develop a real or imagined experience or event
Social Studies:
Identifies the components of geography
Demonstrates the rights and responsibilities of good citizenship

Standards are assessed using a 3 point rubric: 
Meets the standard 3, Partially meets the standard 2 and Does not meet the standard 1.

The first trimester is spent creating a literacy environment in the classroom, building reading stamina, testing to determine reading needs, and strategy instruction.  During the first trimester we have assessed the following standards from the Iowa and Common Core:
Reading:
• Employs research-based reading strategies (metacognition, making connections, and visualization)
• Reads with sufficient accuracy and fluency
Writing:
• Develop clear and coherent writing
• Writes on demand using grade-level skills and strategies
• Edits and publishes own writing using an editing checklist or set of rules
• Generate a narrative to develop a real or imagined experience or event
Social Studies:
• Applies concepts of culture
• Applies concepts of economics
• Applies concepts of geography
• Applies concepts of knowledge of rights and responsibilities of good citizenship
Standards are assessed using a 3 point rubric: Meets the standard 3, Partially meets the standard 2 and Does not meet the standard 1.
