  • TUESDAY No more GYM.  .NO spelling homework for the rest of the year.  Please practice the words for Volume 5 (see below) during the summer vacation so that your child will know them for second grade.  .

  • WEDNESDAY NO more computer.  Please have your child try "code.org" during the summer.  They are really enjoying it.  Click on "Useful Links" on left and then find the "code" link.  Try it yourself! NO math homework for the rest of the year.NO more "Wednesday Folders" until next year.NOTE:  Many notes will now be sent home via Email.  If you are not receiving the Emails please let the office know.CDs with PowerPoint slide shows went  home on Wednesday, June 7.  Please try them out to see if they work.  Thank you!

  • FRIDAY NO more art and music for year.No more spelling tests for the rest of the year.  Please review Volume 5 words with your child during the summer as well as any words that your child had difficulty with.  Most children need to practice the words "they, friend, please, and because."

WEEKLY SKILLS

  • READING SKILLS
    Please practice the sounds that your child learned during the year.  Many of them showed a weakness in decoding skills for the "Year End" reading test.
    • Review ALL short vowels
    • Review ALL long vowel digraphs:
      • -a-e, -ay, -ai-
      • -ee, -e, -ee-, -ea-
      • -i-e, -igh
      • -o-e, -ow, -oa-, 
      • -ue, -u-e
    • Review all other vowel digraphs:
      • -oo-, -ew, -oy, -oi-
    • Review consonant blends and digraphs:
      • L blends:  bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl
      • R blends:  br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr
      • S blends:  sc, scr, sk, sl, sm, sn, st, str, squ
      • Digraphs:  ch, sh, th, wh, wr, kn

    PENMANSHIP-The children will be reviewing the letter strokes for each letter of the alphabet (one letter per week now.  In the past, I noticed that not all of the children were using the correct letter strokes.  Many times they seemed to be "drawing" the letters (and numbers) rather than printing them.  I will go over the correct letter strokes with them in class.  Feel free to print out the "Penmanship Model" below if your child is having difficulty.

    NOTE:  For Reading standards click on "Useful Links" (left) and Grade One Standards Link (at bottom) and then LANGUAGE ARTS link.

SPELLING AND VOCABULARY WORDS

  • NO Spelling tests for the rest of the year.
    Please review the spelling words from ALL of the lessons before second grade, especially any words that your child has had difficulty with.  I have attached all of the spelling lessons below.
