Writing:
  • This week in writing we will be finishing up on the chapter on verbals.  The test for verbals will be before Christmas break.  Students have learned gerunds and participles.  Please have your child see me if they need more practice.  Although this is a short chapter, it is one of the most challenging of the year.

Good Afternoon,
Below are some updates/reminders for the week ahead. (November 18-22)

Weekend Homework:
  • Organize your notes from Fahrenheit 451.  (Our final essay is going to be done in class on Monday.  Students will be allowed to use their summary sheets and notes from the entire book.  I told students that if they didn't have a summary sheet from one section of the book, they could make one.  Include the key details/main points for that section in your summary.)
  • Reread a section that you found particularly difficult in the book to help review for this summary essay.

Reading:
  • This week in reading we will be finishing up Fahrenheit 451 with a final book objective summary.  Students will have 2 entire class periods to work on this.  They can have all notes, worksheets, and the book out to help gather details for this essay.  Students were also given the rubric so they can self check/ check off each area needed as they write their essay.
  • On Wednesday, we will be jumping right into our next novel with a whole group preview activity.  Each reading group will be reading a different novel this time.  I have plenty of copies to send home, so no need to buy this book.  Students will sign out this novel and can bring it home to read and read in school.  Please encourage them to do so.
  • The standards for this novel will be theme and a continuation of summary.  (Although they won't have to write a summary of this book...the final assessment will be different.)
  • Our next word of the day quiz will be Thursday.  Students have all of the words already, so they can study early.
Writing:
  • This week in writing we will begin by writing our objective summary.  This grade for language arts is a true connection between reading and writing.  Students will have both Monday and Tuesday in class to write their essay.  We will have access to the computer cart both days, so students will share the document with me via google docs when they are finished.  Students will be able to spell and grammar check their essay as well.
  • On Thursday and Friday students will be rewrite a journal entry to share with a former teacher and/or rewriting a turkey tale that they have written.
  • Also, this week students are being introduced to gerunds.  Gerunds are a word that looks like a verb, but acts like a noun.  (Crazy write?)  Ash your son/daughter to explain them to you.
Reminders:
Have a great weekend.  Please feel free to email me with any further questions.
