Solutions should always match the problem. Before prescribing any medicine or therapies, ethical physicians first create a diagnosis by examining their patients and looking at any information they can get from tests. At least in this respect the art of teaching is analogous to a doctor's work: in order to be effective, educators must have a clear understanding of their student's abilities. The purpose of the cornerstone task is to give your English and Social Studies teachers an accurate picture of where you are right now as a reader and a writer. The information you give us will inform what we do in class going forward. You will receive scores for your essay, but it will be logged in your social studies class as a pass-fail assignment. That means it will count neither for you nor against you - unless you don't turn it in or you cheat, in which case you will fail. Your English teachers will tell you what your summer reading work counts for.
Please attend to the following...
1. Google "google drive." Login using your er9 id and password.
2. Click the blue "new" button and then click "google doc."
3. In the new doc, click "untitled document" in the upper left corner and retitle it using this formula:
W1 (or W4 or W7), your last name, cornerstone task
Example: W7, Bilinski, cornerstone task
4. Click the blue "share" button on the upper right corner and give rsmith@er9.org access.
5. Put your name, period and "Mr. Smith" at the top of the essay. Compose your response to the prompt in the doc. You will have the rest of the period to work.
6. At the end of class, you can print out your essay and hand it in or take it home to revise on your own. Hand in your summer reading work, too, and put it in a separate pile. If you revise, a printed and stapled copy is due the next class period.
