Honors Madman As Hero

Summer Work 2018

Mr. Gang / Mr. Smith / Ms.Staley

ALL WORK IS DUE BY THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.  ANY STUDENT WITHOUT THE REQUIRED SUMMER WORK WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE WITH THE COURSE WITH THE HONORS DESIGNATION.  PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR PAPER TO TURNITIN.COM.

Step #1: Read All Quiet on the Western Front. To verify that you read the entire book, you must summarize each of the chapters IN YOUR OWN WORDS (in one document on turnitin.com) and submit the document to turnitin.com. Each of the summaries should be at least one developed paragraph (at least 6-7 sentences). Visit your teacher to pick up a book.

Step #2: Examining World War I Primary Sources - Great War Primary Document Archive - http://www.gwpda.org/

Use the above link to access at least ten primary documents, both text and image on the Great War. Feel free to use similar sites to access primary sources.  In an electronic journal, write down your observations for each source and make direct connections to your reading in All Quiet on the Western Front. Connections should examine what motivates people to go to war.  Direct quotes and proper citations (MLA format) are required. Submit this assignment to turnitin.com to verify authenticity and originality and share your work with your teacher in a google doc.

Step #3a: Conduct background research on the Nazi leader Hermann Göring in order to be able to complete Step #3b. You are not required to turn in notes for this step.

Step #3b: At the end of World War II, Göring was captured by the Allies and was subsequently interviewed by American psychologist Gustave Gilbert.  In this interview, Gilbert asked Göring about what motivates people to go to war. Read the selected section from the interview and think about what motivates people and nations to declare war.  Look for connections to what you investigated in Steps #1 and #2. Would Remarque and Göring agree or disagree about what motivates people to go to war? In what ways? Write a three-page, 1.5 spacing essay to the prompt.  Be sure to cite appropriately as needed. You will be dropped from the Honors section if you do not have a minimum of 5 formal in-text citations and a formal Works Cited Page. Submit this assignment to turnitin.com to verify authenticity and originality.

Excerpt from Gilbert’s interview with Göring:

"Göring: Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.

Gilbert: There is one difference. In a democracy, the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars.

Göring: Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."
