Today: Module Eight, Lesson One
insert- https://prezi.com/b1bmlzuzfkpp/whos-who-realism-1865-1915/
Today: "Let's keep it real." "Keepin' it real." "The real deal." What does it mean to "keep it real" in writing? Remember, the Romantics and the Transcendentalists often "romanticized" or flamboyantly told the story of America and the human spirit. The Realists, however, aimed to present life as we know it. Think of it as "America in the raw" with all of our successes, shortcomings, quirks, and charms. In this module you will examine three Realist writers as well as their subgroups of Naturalism (focus on the "wild frontier") and Regionalism (showing the "local color" of specific areas in America). Realism can be seen in Frontier Humor, popularized by Mark Twain, and in darker tales by Ambrose Bierce, Jack London, and Kate Chopin. The writers of the period created a style that would last well into the 20th century. Today you will look into Kate Chopin and "The Story of an Hour."
