Today: Throughout this module, you have grappled with texts that present the social and political turmoil of the Civil War and Reconstruction. With this post-assessment, you will continue to examine the political and social forces that inspired this literature and non-literary writing.
The Task:
You will begin by considering the social forces that Huckleberry Finn, a character introduced in this module, was up against as he made the decision to help Jim escape from slavery. Please use the websites listed in the assignment to gather information of the period and the legislation in favor of slavery.
After viewing these sites, write Huck a letter telling him what you think of his decision, referencing excerpts from his monologue in chapter 31 as well as information from the abolitionist movement and the Fugitive slave act as discussed in the websites above. Your letter should speak directly to Huck, and should not just say what you admire about him and his decision. Also, in the letter, relate a similar modern dilemma you may have faced and discussed what lessons you learned from Huck in regards to dealing with this situation.
Remember to proofread your work and that you directly reference the information from the websites and Chapter 31 from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
