Outside reading is required in sixth grade. I am very excited about the Accelerated Reading Program. This is a program that uses computer tests to interest children in reading. Students choose a book, read it, and take a test on the computer. Points earned are based upon the book’s reading level. The AR library continues to grow. If you are not sure if it is an AR book, send it to school and have your child check. STUDENTS MUST HAVE THEIR AR BOOKS WITH THEM IN CLASS EVERY DAY! The book must be a chapter book. Students will also be expected to read for at least 10 minutes from their AR books each night at home.
AR Reading Incentive Program
Incentive Program (AR)
Independent reading is required for all students according to grade-level requirements. In addition, we are very excited to offer incentives beyond the report card grade for reading through the Accelerated Reading Program. This program uses computer tests to interest children in reading. Students choose a book, read it, and take a test on the computer. Points earned are based upon the book’s reading level. The AR library continues to grow. If you are not sure if it is an AR book, send it to school and have your child check.
STUDENTS MUST HAVE A BOOK TO READ IN CLASS EVERY DAY AT ALL TIMES!
The books must be at or above the student’s reading level. Students will also be expected to read from their books each night at home according to grade-level requirements. (Please note: Fifth-grade students should read at least 30 minutes a night) The books read for independent reading requirements are the ones that must be used for AR Incentives. (Conferences with the teacher about reading level goals will be ongoing.)
AR Incentive Program Specifics
The AR Incentive Program will be based on the amount of AR points that students receive as an individual or as a class each trimester. The number of AR points awarded for a particular book depends on the score of an AR test. Students will be able to take AR tests in the classroom with the teacher’s permission or during computer class. All students should know how to access the AR Book Finder and AR Test sites; however, if a student is having difficulty, he or she should ask for help. Please refer to the chart below for a breakdown of the incentives given.
*Raffle Tickets- For each level the students will receive the amount of raffle tickets listed. If they complete all levels, they will have accumulated a total of 21 raffle tickets that will be added to the trimester drawing. Raffles will be conducted at mid-term and at end of trimester. Students may submit or hold raffle tickets for either drawing.
*Comfy Chairs- Students will be given the privilege to sit and read in large, comfy chairs for a 40 minute period.
*Desk Mobile –Student may move desk anywhere in the classroom for one day.
*Drop Lowest Grade- Students will be able to drop the grade on one homework assignment in reading. Tests, quizzes, and projects may not be dropped.
*Snack- Students will be able to have a healthy snack during two silent reading times of their choice
*First or Second Grade Reader- Students will be able to select a book approved by their homeroom teacher and Mrs. Gottardo or Mrs. Siorek to read to the first or second grade.
*If the students together earn a class average of 15 points, an extra recess will be awarded to all students who participated in AR during the trimester.
*If the students together earn a class average of 20 points, an afternoon Friday movie will be awarded to all students who participated in AR during the trimester.
At the start of each trimester, the AR points will begin at 0. Throughout the trimester, students will be able to work towards different incentives. Teachers will evaluate AR points on Fridays, and distribute incentives on Mondays. Please note that at the end of each trimester the incentives will be re-evaluated. Students will be made aware of any changes. Information about the AR Incentive Program will be posted in the rooms of 4-6th grade.
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT AR TESTS:
AR Tests should be taken immediately after a student completes a book. Thus, no student should wait until the last week or day before the end of a trimester to take AR Tests. Teachers will monitor test taking and conference with any student as needed about procedures. In general, teachers should see points accumulate every two to three weeks, expecting that this is the amount of time needed to complete most AR books given silent reading time in class and required time at home.
So, students get your books in hand and START READING!!!
