Unit 4 Understanding Organic Reactions
Finally we can begin to do some chemistry. We have learned the nomenclature and now we can begin applying some of the topics that were covered in chemistry class to organic chemical reactions. We will go over the very basics during this unit. We will further develop our understanding of orbitals from unit 1. We will discuss sigma and pi bonds and the differences between the two as well as their effect on molecular structure. With regards to bonding we will focus on bond creation and bond cleavage specifically. We will learn how to express the amount of energy in bonds, the amount of energy to create bonds, and the amount of energy to break bonds. We will discuss thermodynamics in terms of entropy and enthalpy. We will also learn how to read, create, and interpret energy diagrams.
