Electrochemistry

You've made it! This is the final unit of the course. We will be putting the previous chapter, redox reactions, to work. Literally! We will learn about how chemists have harnessed the flow of electrons in each half reaction to produce different electrical potentials, voltage, which when connected through an external circuit will allow an electric current to flow. This is one of the more useful applications of chemistry in everyday life that goes unnoticed, unappreciated, or misunderstood. We will progress from the voltaic cell to the applications of an electrolytic cell. We will discuss the various applications of dry cell batteries, lead storage batteries, and fuel cells. We will also learn about the value of forcing the process to run in reverse through electrolysis like electroplating, electrowinning, and finally electrorefining. We will learn how to quantitatively analyze these cells by calculating electric potentials, and the conversions that can result. Great work chemists!
