I'd just like to let you guys know I wasn't exactly comfortable watching this movie. It wasn't the subject matter or violence. I was just soaked. As I was walking into the theater, Mother Nature decided to cleanse the Earth with the mother of all thunderstorms. Because of this, I sat for about two hours looking like I just got out of the shower. With that tale out of the way let's jump into the masterpiece that is Baby Driver.
Baby Driver is directed by Edgar Wright and stars Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey. Baby (Elgort) is a getaway driver who his forced back into the crime life by his old boss (Spacey). The only issue is the job was doomed to fail before it even started. Notice how I said this movie was a masterpiece before. Well that's because it is. I went into this movie knowing very little. There was one trailer I watched a couple of months ago, and I really wasn't paying attention because I was so tired. This was one of those rare moments when a film surprises me with how fantastic it is. Elgort does a great job as Baby. There's a certain something about him that just really hooked me in. The way his character is portrayed is very well done because it lets the audience really feel for Baby. In a weird way he actually reminded me a lot of Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy. Both characters have a great taste in music. Spacey is phenomenal as the boss. The real scene stealer is Jon Hamm who plays Buddy. I don't want to delve too deeply into his character because that's spoiler territory. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is fantastic in their roles. The movie is also quite unpredictable, too. It goes a certain way, and then you think you know where a certain scene is going. The movie then does a complete u-turn and goes in a different direction. I love when movies do that. The action is incredible too. When the bullets started flying, my adrenaline pumped up. I got a thrill from watching it. This is because of the way the director timed the sequences. When a bullet was shot, it was timed to a certain part of the song Baby was listening to. It was brilliant. This movie has everything: humor, action, great music, and heart. I can't stop singing this film's praises. This is why it's so hard to pick out any negatives.
I actually can't really think of many things I didn't like about this movie. There were some scenes that felt a little slow, but then WHAM! things get kicked into high gear. The ending dragged just a teeny bit, but other than that, I honestly can't think of any other things wrong with this movie.
To sum everything up, Baby Driver is a gem. The cast nails it, the direction is great (there's so many awesome continuous shots), the music is fun, and the action is awesome. Sure, the ending drags on a bit, but if that's my only complaint, then the movie did a damn good job. I encourage everyone to go see Baby Driver. I give it a 9.5/10.
