Dr. Christian started as a radio program in 1937 and became very popular. 

RKO started the Dr. Christian film series in 1939.  It stared Jean Hersholt as the hard-working medico of Rivers End, Minnesota.

In the first film, Meet Dr. Christian (1939), the Doctor is desperate to get a new hospital built.  He is forced to square off against the town's bureaucratic mayor who wants a highway constructed instead. But after the politician's daughter is injured in an accident, Dr. Christian proves how important getting a new medical facility.

Six Dr. Christian movies were made from 1939 and 1941.

Dr Christian had a folksy bedside manner and an abiding interest in his patients that went beyond their symptoms.  He not only cured their ills but helped them face their personal problems.

1. Meet Dr. Christian (1939) - Jean Hersholt

Dr. Christian (Jean Hersholt) who runs the health department in a small town. He seeks to build a hospital, but is turned down by the mayor (Paul Harvey). The mayor decided that a highway would better suit the town than a new hospital.


A "professor" hits Dr. Christian's (Jean Hersholt) town, promising the local women dramatic weight loss in a very short time if they follow his regimen of strict diet and a particular type of diet pill. Dr. Christian tries to warn them that the man is a dangerous charlatan but, mesmerized by the prospect of almost instantaneous weight loss, the women ignore his warnings.

3. Dr. Christian - They Meet Again (1941) – Jean Hersholt:

In this last entry in the "Dr. Christian" series, the good doctor is determined to free a young man from prison. The man was sent there for embezzlement, but Dr. Christian doesn't believe he embezzled the money, and sets out to find the real culprit.
