Mount Carmel Seniors Home celebrated the 90th anniversary of its service to the city of St. Catharines.  The celebration started on September 11th with an open house, where the Carmelite Sisters D.C.J., who own and operate Mount Carmel Home, welcomed old and new friends, families of the residents, of staff and other guests, some visiting Mount Carmel for the first time.  All were invited to tour the Facility and visit with the Sisters, Staff and Residents who joyfully greeted everybody and proudly showed off their rooms.  It was an exciting day, filled with happy smiles, fun memories and good food.

The celebration was completed with Holy Mass at St. Catherine of Alexandria cathedral on September 14, presided by Bishop O’Mara and concelebrated by Mount Carmel’s chaplain Msgr. R. Montague and other priests of the diocese. The General Superior of the congregation and her Vicar came from Europe for the special occasion as did several Sisters from the Mississauga Home where the Carmelites D.C.J. also care for the elderly.  Many friends of Mount Carmel Home, the Sisters, staff and residents attended Mass, offering to God praise and thanksgiving for the work done at Mount Carmel for so many years.

The Carmelite Sisters started their work in the Niagara region when in 1914, the foundress of the Order, Blessed Maria Teresa of St. Joseph, established a home for girls in Merritton.  The location was found not suitable for children, so the Sisters decided to transfer the children to the Toronto Home and instead to respond to the need of a Home for the Aged in St. Catharines.  Soon they found a great place on Yates Street for their new enterprise, and in 1920 the first Holy Mass was celebrated and Mount Carmel received the first six guests.  The building as it stands today has changed but the caring family spirit instituted by the foundress remains the same thanks to the dedication of the Sisters and Staff.  Mount Carmel Home offers independent living with basic care services to individuals who prefer a carefree lifestyle with some assistance.  Tours of the Facility can be set up by appointment at 905-685-9155 or by email:  carmel@vaxxine.com
