Dedication of the Civil War Monument in Greenfield Cemetery
On the 23rd the Soldiers Monument in Hempstead will be unveiled. The exercises will take place in Greenfield Cemetery at 2:30 o’clock PM. General Horatio C. King of Brooklyn will deliver the oration. Addresses are expected from General Henry W. Slocum of Brooklyn, Colonel Fleming of Jamaica and ex-Congressman James W. Covert. There will be a parade of Grand Army posts and veterans associations. The line will form at 1:00 o’clock on Front Street opposite Town Hall facing south. Moses A. Baldwin Post will occupy the center and D. B. P. Mott Post will occupy the right of the line with visiting posts between them. The Fire Departments of Hempstead and Freeport will occupy the left of the line. Thomas V. Smith will act as marshall. The order of march will be as follows: Freeport Cornet Band, Memorial Committee, Town Board, invited guests, Mott Post, Drum Corps, Ford Post of Canarsie, Clark Post of Patchogue, Downing Post of Glen Cove, Guerney Post of Bayshore, Jamaica Veterans Association, drum corps, Warren Post of Sons of Veterans, Baldwin Post of Hempstead, Brass Band, Fire Departments of Hempstead and Freeport. When the ceremony of unveiling takes place the command will form three sides of a hollow square with the monument as center. The route of the procession will be down Front street to the Town Hall to Washington Street to Fulton to Main to Front to Franklin to Fulton to Main to Front to Greenwich to the cemetery.
