TV's Update - Wednesday 5 September 2012

posted 4 Sep 2012, 22:53 by Monash Running

This week – Tuesday 4th September 2012

Another big turnout this week, 72 – with our special guest, Podiatrist Jason Agosta, a drawcard

And what a nice night ? A few even ran barefoot – but they are practiced at it !

Once again - lots of apologies this week, around 30  – thanks to all of you who took the small trouble to let me know you couldn’t make it

We welcomed a few more new squad members this week – Rita Gabrial, Jelena Maric, & Anastasia. Please stick at it – everyone improves – but it does take time (& few other runs each week as build up)

Even though the oval has dried out pretty well it was rough & in need of a mow – let’s hope that it’s improved a bit next week.

Our session was a favourite – although a really quite hard workout – ‘Mona Fartlek’ . “Mona’ consists of 2 x 90sec efforts , 90 sec recovery, 4 x 60 sec, 60 sec recovery, 4 x 30 sec, 30 sec recovery, and 4 x 15 sec, 15 sec recovery. With of course the usual warm up / warm down.

Don’t hesitate to ask me if you would like any help at all with a regular training program or goal setting and/or ideas on opportunities to get into a few races to test your progress.

‘Tan Relays’ – Saturday 15th September 2012 (9.00am start)

We will now be entering Monash squad teams in the Tan Relays – to be held on the Tan Track (3.8km circuit) at Kings Domain – start/finish area opposite Swan St Bridge.

All runners cover 1 lap of the tan – and those of you who participated in this event last year will have times on the board as your goal to better this time.

In order to enable me to enter teams I’ll need you to let me know by Friday night this week at the very latest – so email or call me if you wish to participate. One thing that we may need to do for this event however is ask each participant to contribute towards the cost of the team entry – just a couple of $ each maximum.

We finish the morning off with a great Morning Tea get together.

As usual we will be in action on Tuesday next, 11th September  2012

In 2012, as usual, we’re located at the Baseball field, & using the pavilion over there. Access by car is quite good & parking is very handy - enter from Ring Road East & go around to the Baseball field along the road around the back (Wellington Rd end) of Oval 1. You can park at the rear of the pavilion if space – or on the dirt road above if you like

Podiatrist Visit

We are most grateful to Jason Agosta for taking the time to visit us last night and talk some real common sense stuff about how to look after our bodies when running – especially our feet.

Point made re shoes is that heavy bulky shoes are out. a runner cannot run efficiently in heavy footwear.

Many runners won't adapt to barefoot after years of wearing shoes

Best is to be in lightweight simple shoes

Crucial for efficiency

Prevent injury

Points made were:

Stand ‘tall’,  Run ‘over’ the ground, Arms up in front of chest, Slight inc. knee lift, Relax

Saturday Morning Hill Session at Jells Park

Our  Hill session WILL go ahead again next Saturday morning (8th September) - at Jells Park, and I’ll be there. We’ll meet at the usual  spot, ready to run, at 8.30am SHARP (please try to be on time) -  out the front of the cafe – ‘Madeline’s’. Enter Jells Park from the entrance in Waverley Rd extension – opposite the Glen Waverley Golf Course.

No racing this weekend so I expect a big turnout. We welcomed a few newies this week – hope you all enjoyed the experience – and that coffee/chat afterwards

Running Group Waiver Form – A message from Monash Sport.

All participants of the Running Group are required by the University to complete a waiver form. This form has a number of purposes. It firstly acts as a waiver to advise participants of the potential risks involved in the activity. It will also provide Monash Sport with valuable statistics in regards to who (student/staff/alumni/community) is participating in this activity. The University is requesting information on who is participating in all of Monash Sport's programs so this will assist Monash Sport in their reporting back to the University about student, staff and alumni usage. The form also provides an emergency contact point should anything happen. Hopefully we never need to use this information though!

If you haven't completed a form already, please click on the link below to download a form, complete it and bring it to the next session and give it to me /TV.

I will have spare blank forms with me of a Tuesday evening. Thanks to the great many of you who have completed & returned forms to me already.
