Double Take Triple Give brings together projects that belong to the school of Social Practice. Artists working socially share a desire to make art beyond the gallery, to facilitate collective exchange, to realize an approach to creativity past individual authorship, and to avoid capitalism’s grip on art. They have engaged the process of generating culture directly, communicating to a public not via an image or object, but through an experience they create. The exhibition Double Take Triple Give is an experimental investigation of the conditions under which we receive socially based art and its documentation. Each of the projects on show pushes the boundaries of social interaction – some focus on civic engagement and public service while others look at role-play, peer pressure, and violent interventions.
Each of the works, which are projected onto large screens surrounding the museum's second floor, is paired with a “talkback station.” Visitors are invited to talk back at the work and the accumulated responses make up a parallel work in and of itself. This experimental curatorial set-up intends a double function: it links the works back to the social sphere, challenging the hermetic nature of the art gallery, and also supplements the artists' authorship by letting others speak for the work.
"להחזיר מבט" בוחנת עבודות השייכות לקטגוריה הכללית של "פרקטיקה אמנותית-חברתית" (Social Practice). המשותף לאמנים הפועלים במסגרת זו הוא הרצון ליצור מחוץ לגבולות הגלריה, לאפשר שיח הדדי קולקטיבי, לממש חזון יצירתי שמעבר ליוצר האינדיבידואלי ולחמוק משליטת הקפיטליזם בעולם האמנות. בשני העשורים האחרונים התרחבה פעילותם של אמנים המנסים לקחת חלק בתהליך הייצור התרבותי באופן ישיר, כלומר לתקשר עם קהלם שלא באמצעות דמוי או אובייקט אלא דרך חוויה והתנסות. התערוכה "להחזיר מבט" מבקשת להציג את הפעולה האמנותית-חברתית על ביטוייה העכשוויים, לבחון כיצד אנו קולטים אותה ובאילו תנאים. כל אחד מהפרויקטים המוצגים מותח בדרכו את גבולות האינטראקציה החברתית – חלקם מדגישים מעורבות אזרחית ואחריות חברתית, ואילו אחרים בוחנים משחקי תפקידים או מצבים שהיחיד מותקף בהם בפעולה כמו-אלימה.
העבודות יוקרנו על המסכים הגדולים הסובבים את קומתו השנייה של המוזיאון. לכל עבודה צורפה גם "עמדת תגובה" בקומתו התחתונה של המוזיאון, בה מבקרים וצופים מוזמנים לתאר את העבודות או להגיב עליהן. התגובות שיצטברו הן מעין מקבילה לעבודות עצמן, מין ניסוי אוצרותי המכוון להשיג מטרה כפולה: ראשית, לחבר את העבודה בחזרה לספירה החברתית באופן שמציב אתגר לאופי ההרמטי של התצוגה בגלריות; ושנית, לשלול מעט מהקרדיט של האמן ולתת גם לאחרים את הזכות לדבר בשם העבודה.

MoBY [Museums of Bat Yam] is a complex of three museums, offering a wide platform for cultural research, theory, and criticism. We promote experimental approaches to art, curatorial practice and education, initiate exchanges with peer institutions, and engage in an on-going dialogue with various local communities. Over the past three years, the new managing staff has set up a unique agenda of international exhibitions, public programs and academic conferences accompanied by researched catalogues and other publications.
Ben Ari Museum of Contemporary Art:
This unique building - 935 square meters of round 60s architecture - hosts international exhibitions of contemporary art and presents its permanent sculpture collection. The museum's yearly activities include four large-scale exhibitions organized by in-house and guest curators, frequent Public Program's events, conferences and education projects.
Ryback House:
Named after the Russian-French artist Issachar Ryback, the museum holds the largest collection of the artist's paintings, drawings, and sculptures (currently in restoration). The museum further accommodates MoBY's ever-growing collection of contemporary art and functions as a center for MoBY's education and community activities.
Sholem Asch's Home:
The original home of acclaimed Yiddish writer Sholem Asch contains an extraordinary collection of manuscripts, judaica, documentations, photographs, and paintings. Upon its upcoming re-opening, the museum will host exhibitions and literary events.

"יחידות" מהווה מסגרת לחמש תערוכות יחיד של חמישה אמנים ישראלים, המציגים עבודות חדשות במדיה שונים. הפורמט "יחידות" מוצע כמחווה אוצרותית מותאמת-מקום, המגיבה לתנאים המיוחדים שמייצר חלל המוזיאון העגול והפתוח בעבור הצגת תערוכות יחיד. החלל מייצר תהליך צפייה שהוא בו זמנית מחולק ומוכלל, ייחודי ומרובה, ומציף את המתח ביניהם. המושג "יחידות" טומן בחובו ייחודיות אבל גם חזרה ורצף. יחידה היא בהכרח חלק משלם, והרצף עצמו מתקיים ככזה מתוך היחידות המבנות אותו. דווקא הסמיכות וההקשר, אבני הבסיס של תערוכה, מאפשרים לזהות ולחשב את הערך הסגולי. לנוכח עקרונות אלה, "יחידות" מציעה מפגש עם שפתו הייחודית והמורכבת של כל אמן, ובאותו זמן את היחסים הנוצרים בין גופי העבודות השונים.

About Factory
FACTORY is a bi-focal international exhibition that opens on May 25th in two sites in the city of Bat Yam. FACTORY offers a contemporary stance on the relations between artistic and industrial production, while critically examining the relations between public and private space, and the meanings and possibilities of artistic action within these realms.
FACTORY exhibition brings to the surface the critical tension that resides in production processes of different art practices (video, sound, installation, performance etc.) between the live event, concrete artifacts and their display and consumption. The same tension will arise and echo in the relationship that will be formed between the two venues of the exhibition – an institutional space (the museum) and an alternative one (the industrial area, a non-artistic space and nonetheless a much desired location for art display in the last decade, because of its seemingly raw nature). The artistic activity in each of the sites will be shaped according to the unique characteristics of each space. The exhibition's theme was inspired by Andy Warhol's famous studio, which during the 60s carried diverse functions – a gathering place for the New York bohemia, a site in which both superstars and marginal characters dwelled, a place that shaped the public and artistic persona of Warhol and his companions while functioning as an artist's studio in the full sense of the word, generating artistic production in various mediums.
Parallel to the opening of an exhibition in Bat Yam Museum of Contemporary Art, we will hold a three-day live artistic event, done much in the spirit of Happenings, in the industrial area of the city. This event is the culmination of a wide artistic and curatorial research – 15 artists arrived to the industrial area during May and created site-specific works in collaboration with the local factories and businesses. FACTORY exhibition relates to the renovation process that Bat Yam's industrial area is undergoing these days, as it is transformed into a "business area", materializing a vision of an urban city. The two locations of the exhibition, the industrial area and the museum, are controlled by similar economic and political powers, and are in midst of transformation, thereby creating a rare opportunity to act in a local, exposed and temporary state of affairs. The framework of the industrial area requires a reexamination of curatorial and artistic positions, being aware of the impossibility of seamlessly integrating in the area and of the necessity to articulate the intervention in relation to, and as a part of, the processes that it is going through. We arrive and place one thing on another. The result might agree, overlap, or create a dissonant.

MoBY is proud to present Laptopia, an international sound exhibition originating from a yearly festival for experimental art by the same name, organized by the label 'Interval Recordings'. Laptopia exhibition will show sound installations, created specifically for the museum's space, while using a laptop as a platform for digital/utopian creation. The participating artists will create their works in the space itself, in a joined process – individual and collective at the same time. This process will generate an overall plastic contraction, composed of independent sound entities. These sound units will function as components of a more comprehensive structure, while communicating both with the space and with each other. The physical and conceptual connections formed throughout the exhibition will transform it to one elaborated and multilayered work in space, directly relating to the possibility of utopian creation in society.
Events:
:::Opening Night The main opening event in the Bat Yam Museum of Contemporary Art will be followed by another event, in the spirit of previous Laptopia festivals, held at 'Levontin 7' club in Tel Aviv. This event will feature live performances by the participating artists and other sound and experimental artists. The people attending the opening will be offered a special transportation service between the two venues.

Exhibitions, festivals, experimental events, institutional organizations and alternative spaces – in all of these, and all over the cultural map, sound has become a vital presence.
Facing Sound is a unique conference in the local context, dedicated to forming an elaborate and intriguing discourse around the position of sound in the contemporary art field. Artists, musicians, curators and scholars will approach the subject from practical and theoretical standpoints, exploring it from specific and personal points of view.
The conference outline contains three panels. A specially curated video program will be screened between each panel, featuring video works by Israeli and International artists whose work rely mainly on the element of sound.

מהם היחסים בין סאונד לדימוי? מהי מידת העצמאות של הסאונד כמדיום אמנותי? מהם הקשרים בין אמנות הסאונד למדיה חדשה ולהתפתחויות טכנולוגיות? מהם הקשרים בין מהלכים וחקירות ניסיונות בסאונד לבין ממדים אסתטיים וחברתיים? כיצד מתפקד הסאונד בחלל, ובאופן ספציפי בתוך הממסד האמנותי? האם הוא דורש חשיבה מחודשת על גבולותיו, על יכולת הקיבול שלו ועל קהל המבקרים בו?

DEMONS exhibition will show the works of Israeli and Polish artists, while functioning as a platform for artistic dialogue. The theme of demons, which is both direct and elusive, confronts mutual fears, impulses, ghosts and shadows, dealing through them with contemporary concepts of history and creativity.
This exhibition doesn't aspire to deal with demonology or the dark side of theology, but to reflect on demons as a metaphor. Trying to speak about demons is like attempting to convert the punctum into studium. Impossible as it may be, we find this task essential, for “they are there, specters, even if they do not exist, even if they are no longer, even if they are not yet. They give us to rethink the 'there'…" (Derrida, Specters of Marx, 176). Through the medium(s) of art, we explore the common "there" of several simultaneous spaces, swarming with demons and apparitions – those of history, culture and the self. It is because in these haunted times, the constant stare of the demon is fundamental to our own consciousness and self-reflection.

The exhibition "Displacements" is concerned with childhood experiences of immigration. The artists participating in this exhibition all immigrated to Israel at a young age, or experienced the decisive influence of immigration early on in their lives.
Childhood experiences of immigration open up onto an entire sphere of tensions and conflicts that are unique to the situation in which an individual is relocated from one house to another, from one culture to another, without being given any choice. As these elements become clearer, so does their significant influence on contemporary culture and society.
The crisis of immigration produces numerous tensions – another language, feelings of estrangement and belonging, assimilation and difference, wandering and a sense of place, place and home. All these cast into doubt concepts of identity and culture, while simultaneously also producing the insistent urge to search for them and define them. This unrelenting quest is the code, or motor, of the works included in this exhibition.
Most of the artworks were especially made for this exhibition. Like the exhibition itself, these works evolved out of individual, personal and biographical experiences. It is from this subjective perspective that they attempt to reach out, to expand and to touch upon the open expanses of more general, social and artistic concerns.

The promenade is an artificial no man's land between the city by the sea and the infinite wilderness that surrounds it. This narrow and seemingly serene border is in fact a battlefield, where a fearsome struggle takes place between the urban city, which aims to gain control of any available piece of land, and nature, which is constantly being civilized and transformed.
The fifteen works in the Video Marina exhibition displayed at the north end of the Bat Yam promenade attempt to examine the human desire to take control of the environment. They portray the cold urban landscape, describe the process of crushing the individual's feelings, examine the cynical use of the animal kingdom by modern man and critique the aggressive encroachment of the wealthy and powerful over the natural resources that belong to us all. Projected on giant screens along the promenade and inside existing structures, the video works themselves invade, obscure, converse with and intensify the natural resource along which they are shown.
The exhibition's name refers both to the English word "marina", a place where the world's wealthy enjoy exclusive private beaches, and to the common first name "Marina", which connotes the immigrant culture of the Former Soviet Union. With its name alone, the exhibition insinuates that it comes to examine the complicated situation where the powerful gain control and ownership of the collective natural resources that should be in the public domain. Furthermore, this name attempts to point to the complex social fabric of the city of Bat Yam and of Israel as a whole.
