Mentoring is one of the most important activities that MOABOF carries out in support of our mission. Burgers for Boys is the event for young men and Grilling for Girls is the counterpart for the young ladies. Youth between the ages of 9 and 19 are invited to participate in an interactive mentoring workshop and luncheon.  Carefully screened volunteers who are experts in various fields donate their time to speak to the youth about a variety of topics. The volunteer speakers at past events have included elected officials, lawyers, doctors, and community leaders selected by MOABOF leadership.

Since the concerns and issues of a 9 year old differ greatly from those of a 19 year old, the youth are divided into groups by age during the breakout sessions. During these breakout sessions where speakers discuss age-appropriate topics with the youth.  The topics include:

·    Life Skills -  (Applications/ Appearance/ Resume/ Interview Skills)

·    Education -  (Grades/ Potential/ Future Plans/ College/ Trade School)

·   Communication - (Public Speaking/ Respect/ Stereotypes/ Assumptions)

·   Bullying/Respect  - (How to Avoid/ Handle/ Presence)

·  Guns/Tattoos/Drugs  - (Prevention/ Peer Pressure)

·   Sex (Abstinence/ Safety/ Peer Pressure)

The workshop is interactive in that the youth are encouraged to speak and talk about the issues and concerns that matter to them. There is an extended question and answer session which facilitates important dialogue and feedback.  The final part of the workshop is the pairing session where the youth are paired with a mentor for follow-up and ongoing communication.

One of the most enjoyable parts of Burgers for Boys and Grilling for Girls MOABOF's Community Liaison member Richard Cooper's famous burgers. His homemade burgers are legendary and always add a special incentive for those fortunate enough to attend. This event is a labor of love for Rich as he serves as the co-Chair of this event.
