Though it is at a very low elevation, the Laurentian Divide runs through Browns Valley between Lake Traverse and Lake Big Stone.  The Laurentian Divide separates the Atlantic watershed on its south and the Hudson Bay watershed on its north.  Because of its position on the divide, water from Lake Traverse will end up in Hudson Bay through the Red River and water from Lake Big Stone will end up in the Gulf of Mexico via the Mississippi River despite only being a few miles apart.  Even more interestingly, the two lakes have joined during floods in the past and the water still flowed in separate directions.
