Joseph R. Brown Wayside Park

The Joseph R. Brown Wayside Rest is on the site where the Brown house was located until it was destroyed in 1862 during the U.S.-Dakota War.  Compared to the typical houses of the day, the three-story house was a mansion.  Despite the destruction of the house, the Brown family was spared because of his wife's Dakota heritage.
Joseph Brown served in both the Wisconsin and the Minnesota legislatures, as well as the Minnesota Democratic Constitutional Convention in 1857.  In addition to being a politician, Brown was appointed by the Federal Government to serve as an Indian Agent to the Dakota, and served as chief of staff to Henry Sibley-the first governor of Minnesota.
All that remains to date of the impressive house is the granite ruins.
