Le Sueur County Courthouse and Jail

Photo of LeSueur County Courthouse and Jail    The naming of Le Center as the county seat was done in order to end a 22 year long fight between Le Sueur and Cleveland over the title.  Court sessions were held in both towns, when finally the new settlement of Le Center was created as the county seat in 1875 and a two-story brick building was set aside as a courthouse.  In 1896 the current courthouse was built on the same site using Kasota stone.  The central tower was damaged by a storm in 1920 and was rebuilt one story shorter, and a major renovation effort was undertaken in 1975, but the courthouse retains much of its original look.  In 1914 the county jail was erected adjacent to the courthouse with facilities for the Sheriff's office in addition to cells.  The county courthouse and jail are both in use to date.
