New Ulm Glockenspiel

New Ulm Glockenspiel

The Glockenspiel in New Ulm is one of very few free-standing carillon clock towers in the world.  The clock chimes the time of day in traditional Westminster style and plays programmed pieces at noon, 3 and 5 p.m. with its bourdon bells, weighing a total of 2 tons.  In addition to the bells, the tower also contains animated figurines below the clock that dance when the clock chimes.  For 10 months of the year they are polka figurines, from Thanksgiving until early January they are replaced with a nativity scene.  Beneath the figurines, there is a door that opens, revealing 12 three-foot-high animated figurines depicting the history of the city.  These figurines only perform during the musical sections.
