Established in 1860 by August Schell, a German immigrant and one of the original settlers of New Ulm, the August Schell Brewery is the oldest brewery in Minnesota.  The brewery survived as a family owned business through the U.S.-Dakota War, Prohibition (when the brewery produced "near beer," soft drinks, and candy), and the Great Depression.  In 2002, Schell's acquired Grain Belt, another old Minnesota beer, and became the largest brewery in Minnesota by volume.
