Corona Del Sol 3 - Mountain Pointe 6

WP: Polich (5-2)

LP: Bracy

S: Aslamy (2)

The Pride and the Aztecs split their 2 game series, with each team holding serve at home.

On Friday April 13th Mountain Pointe traveled to Corona Del Sol, and lost 7-4.

Alex Bookman pitched tough in the Loss. Bookman (3-3) would bend early, but not break, taking his team out to a 3-2 lead through 3 Innings. But in the 4th, two errors by the Pride defense lead to a 4 run inning and chased Bookman from the game in position to take the Loss. Senior Tristan Flores threw the last 2-1/3 Inn to keep his club in the game, but the Pride were not able to overcome their 4th Inning miscues.

Juniors Jacob McKeon and Jonny Weaver had Multi-hit days in the loss, and teammate Alex Bookman singled in a Run early and later scored another after getting hit by a pitch in the 6th. The Pride would rally late, getting the tying runs on base in the 6th inning - but a flyout would leave the bases loaded and put the Pride down 0-1 in the series.

On Tuesday April 18th the teams would square off in a rematch at Mountain Pointe.

Senior Lefty Cameron Polich toed the rubber for the Pride, and turned in his 3rd consecutive Quality Start. Polich (5-2) pitched to contact early and often, and a clean day for the Pride Defense was the key in this matchup. Polich retired 10 of the first 12 Aztec hitters he faced, and would leave the game after 5 Inn of work with a 5-3 Lead. Sophomore Southpaw Ryan Aslamy entered for Polich and recorded 6 outs facing just 7 hitters to earn the 2 Inn Save, his 2nd of the Season.

The Pride offense would clobber 4 doubles the first time through the batting order, as Krol and Diaz each leadoff a frame with a Double and Run scored, and Wunnenberg and Bookman would each Double home a run. Josh Wunnenberg then added to his team RBI and HR lead with a 3-Run HR (7) to extend the lead to 5-0 after 2 Inn. The Aztecs would fight back, getting 3 Runs in the 5th - but a late Jonny Weaver RBI Single put the momentum back in the Home Dugout and helped the Pride claim a 6-3 Victory.

With only 3 games remaining in the regular season, Mountain Pointe will play back to back days against Desert Vista High School this Thursday and Friday before concluding the regular season next Monday against Pinnacle.

Mountain Pointe 12 - Westview 2

WP: Teraberry (1-0)

LP: Deen

S: Carrasco (1)

The Pride Baseball Club won their 8th straight ballgame on Wednesday, defeating Westview High School 12-2.

The Pride Offense put both their Power and Speed on display against Westview, tallying 6 Extra Base Hits and 6 Stolen Bases in the contest.

Senior Centerfielder Jayden Brooks filled up the stat sheet with a 2B, 2 1B's, a Sac Fly, 2 Runs, 2 SB, and 4 RBI.  Catcher Josh Wunnenberg homered twice (6), driving in 3 runs. And the middle infield combo of Weaver and Tucker combined to reach base 6 times, with a 2B and SB each, as the Pride scored in 6 of their 7 frames in route to the 12-2 Victory.

Senior Paul Teraberry earned the victory for Mountain Pointe on the hill. Teraberry (1-0) threw 4-1/3 masterful innings, allowing just 3 Hits and 1 Walk before his exit in the 5th inning up 5-0. Sophomore Israel Carrazco made his 4th, and best, relief appearance to preserve the victory for Teraberry. Carrazco worked the final 2-2/3 Inn, rendering just 3 hits and 2 Unearned Runs following a dropped pop-up. The Save was Carrazco's first in his Varsity Career.

Mountain Pointe plays Thursday for the 3rd straight day; they face Corona Del Sol on the road at 4pm.

APR 11 2017 - Game 2

Gilbert 1 - Mountain Pointe 13

WP: Polich (4-2)

LP: Wilson

The Mountain Pointe Pride completed the 2 game sweep of Gilbert High School on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 8-4 in League Play and 13-8 Overall.

Sophomore Nick Wallerstedt took the ball for the Pride in his season debut in Game 1 on Friday. Wally labored through an Inning and Two-Thirds, looking sharp in spurts but was pulled after he reached his pre-determined first start pitch limit. Senior Tristan Flores took the ball from there, working 3-1/3 very effective innings to earn his 4th Victory of the season. Flo (4-1) entered the game with a 4-3 lead and 2 outs in the 2nd, and never allowed the Tigers any opportunities to come back. Sophomore lefty Ryan Aslamy protected the lead late in the game, racking up 4 K's and earning a 6 out save as his squad tacked on some late insurance runs to put the game away.

At the dish, Senior Josh Wunnenberg Homered (4) in the 1st inning to give his team a 1-0 lead, and also chipped in RBI singles in both the 2nd and 3rd innings. Left Fielder Jacob "Nighthawk" McKeon had a 3 hit day, and has now tallied 12 total hits in the Pride's last 6 Power Point contests. And while not known for their speed, corner guys Andrew Zavala and Alex Bookman each stole their first base of the season and each scored 2 runs in the Pride's 11-6 Road Victory.

Noteworthy as well here that Senior Kobe Krol drew 3 walks in the contest as he saw his 7-game hit streak come to and end.

After the weekend, the two clubs squared off in Game 2 of their series at Mountain Pointe High School, where the Pride would hand the ball to their Senior Southpaw Cameron Polich. Polich gave his team a 2nd straight Quality Start, throwing 4 Innings without allowing an ER on just 4 Hits and 5 K's. Polich exited the game after 4 IP with a 13-1 lead, and Junior Matt Guzman threw the final scoreless frame.

The Pride Offense saw their first 6 hitters of the game reach base and score a run as they grabbed a 6-1 lead before the crowd had even settled into their seats. Senior Right Fielder Kobe Krol lead off the game with a basehit, and turned in 4 Quality AB's today including a BB, a Sac Fly RBI, two Runs and a Stolen Base. Junior SS Jonny Weaver had himself a 3-hit day, with first inning two-run Double, two singles, 2 Runs and a Stolen Base. Senior First Basemen Logan White & Senior Centerfielder Jayden Brooks each doubled and reached base in all 3 trips with 2 Runs scored, while Brooks added 2 SB. And Freshman Second Baseman Carson Tucker singled twice, scored a run, and executed a squeeze play to drive home a run.

The Pride will put their 7 Game Win Streak on the line against Westview High School on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm.

Mountain Pointe 9 - Desert Ridge 4

WP: Polich (3-2)

LP: Williams

The Pride Baseball Club boosted their record to 10-8 (5-4) on the season by defeating Desert Ridge High School on Tuesday afternoon in dramatic fashion.

The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the Top of the 1st inning when Senior Right Fielder Kobe Krol tripled to lead off the ballgame, and scored on a Josh Wunnenberg single. Wunnenberg would also chip in a 2 RBI double in the 3rd Inning, picking up teammates Diaz and Brooks by driving them in to score.

Although they scored early, the Pride found themselves trailing by one run, 4-3, after stranding base runners in each of the 4th, 5th and 6th innings. But with 2 outs in the 7th, the Pride offense was able to load the bases against the Desert Ridge bullpen - and that's when Senior Alex Bookman delivered the huge clutch hit the Pride have been waiting for, knocking in a pair of runs to give his squad the lead 5-4. Not letting off the gas, Junior Jacob McKeon and Senior Andrew Zavala followed suit with back-to-back doubles - and after trailing most of the ballgame - the Pride suddenly found themselves with a 9-4 lead.

Senior Southpaw Cameron Polich was able to grind out a victory for his team on the mound today. Polich (3-2) battled through a tough stretch in the 2nd and 3rd innings where he allowed all 4 of Desert Ridge's runs (3 earned), but was able to settle in and pitch effectively to his defense the remainder of the game. Polich scattered 12 hits but found his way into 3 timely Double-Play Balls to work out of jams, as he pitched 6-2/3 Inn in his team's win. After eclipsing the 100 pitch mark with 2 outs in the 7th inning, Polich was lifted for Senior Tristan Flores who came in and shut the door with a 3 pitch Strike Out to record the last out of the game.

Mountain Pointe will play host to Desert Ridge on Thursday in game 2 of this week's series, first pitch at 3:45pm.

Highland 1 - Mountain Pointe 3

WP: Bookman (2-2)

LP: Hamzeh

Mountain Pointe Baseball swept their Home-and-Home series with Highland High School this week, defeating the Hawks 18-11 on Thursday, and 3-1 on Friday.

At Highland High School on Thursday, the Hawks struck first by jumping out to an 8-1 lead capitalizing on defensive mistakes from the Pride. Senior Cameron Polich started the game on the mound for the Pride, but failed to get out of the 2nd Inning as he received little help from his defense. Senior Right Hander Tristan Flores came in relief and shut the Hawks down, throwing 5-1/3 very effective innings to give his team a huge boost in their route to a come from behind victory.

Down 8-1 after 2 inn, The Pride would use the Long-Ball to get back into the game. Junior Left Fielder Jacob McKeon hit a Grand Slam in the 3rd inning to get the Pride back within striking distance. McKeon was on base in all 5 trips to the plate, including 5 RBI and 4 Runs scored in a monster offensive day. Then later in the game, now trailing 11-6, Senior Catcher Josh Wunnenberg would leave the yard twice, eventually giving the Pride the lead and putting the game away. Wunnenberg was 4-5 on the day with the 2 HR, a 2B, 3 RBI and 3 Runs scored in the come from behind 18-11 Victory.

The two teams would turn around and meet again at Mountain Pointe High School the next day in a rematch.

Following a game with 29 total runs just 24 hours before, Senior Alex Bookman took the mound determined to keep those big numbers off the board for his club on Friday. After the Hawks leadoff man singled and scored in the 1st inning, Bookman settled in to retire 19 of the next 21 hitters that he faced, including 2 pickoffs that put and end to all of Highland's offensive threats. Book was incredibly efficient and got stronger as the game went on, retiring the side on 10 pitches or less 3 times to go the distance and earn his 2nd Victory of the season.

After their 18 run outburst on Thursday, the Pride offense managed just 5 Hits and 3 Runs in Friday's pitcher's duel - but it was enough to grind out a win. The team used their speed to manufacture runs, swiping 5 bases in the contest. Senior Right Fielder Kobe Krol singled twice, stole 2 bags, scored a run and drove one in. Third Baseman Daniel Diaz singled, and stole a base that lead to the go-ahead run. And pitcher Alex Bookman drove in 2 runs with a Double off the wall and a Sac Fly to help his own cause.

The Pride play back to back games against Desert Ridge this week - Tuesday April 4th on the road and Thursday April 6th at home.

Pride Family,

Thank you to all the fans, parents, and faculty for making the 1st annual Pride Classic a memorable week for players and “out-of-towners”. We would not be able to put on an event of this nature if not for the efforts of our players but most importantly our parents. Numerous competing coaches and parents have told me this has been an amazing week for their boys and their program. Also, a special thanks to all the volunteer workers who spent countless hours for the boys and our program through announcing, ticket takers, concessions, field maintenance. The baseball program is grateful for your efforts and support.
