Highland 1 - Mountain Pointe 3

WP: Bookman (2-2)

LP: Hamzeh

Mountain Pointe Baseball swept their Home-and-Home series with Highland High School this week, defeating the Hawks 18-11 on Thursday, and 3-1 on Friday.

At Highland High School on Thursday, the Hawks struck first by jumping out to an 8-1 lead capitalizing on defensive mistakes from the Pride. Senior Cameron Polich started the game on the mound for the Pride, but failed to get out of the 2nd Inning as he received little help from his defense. Senior Right Hander Tristan Flores came in relief and shut the Hawks down, throwing 5-1/3 very effective innings to give his team a huge boost in their route to a come from behind victory.

Down 8-1 after 2 inn, The Pride would use the Long-Ball to get back into the game. Junior Left Fielder Jacob McKeon hit a Grand Slam in the 3rd inning to get the Pride back within striking distance. McKeon was on base in all 5 trips to the plate, including 5 RBI and 4 Runs scored in a monster offensive day. Then later in the game, now trailing 11-6, Senior Catcher Josh Wunnenberg would leave the yard twice, eventually giving the Pride the lead and putting the game away. Wunnenberg was 4-5 on the day with the 2 HR, a 2B, 3 RBI and 3 Runs scored in the come from behind 18-11 Victory.

The two teams would turn around and meet again at Mountain Pointe High School the next day in a rematch.

Following a game with 29 total runs just 24 hours before, Senior Alex Bookman took the mound determined to keep those big numbers off the board for his club on Friday. After the Hawks leadoff man singled and scored in the 1st inning, Bookman settled in to retire 19 of the next 21 hitters that he faced, including 2 pickoffs that put and end to all of Highland's offensive threats. Book was incredibly efficient and got stronger as the game went on, retiring the side on 10 pitches or less 3 times to go the distance and earn his 2nd Victory of the season.

After their 18 run outburst on Thursday, the Pride offense managed just 5 Hits and 3 Runs in Friday's pitcher's duel - but it was enough to grind out a win. The team used their speed to manufacture runs, swiping 5 bases in the contest. Senior Right Fielder Kobe Krol singled twice, stole 2 bags, scored a run and drove one in. Third Baseman Daniel Diaz singled, and stole a base that lead to the go-ahead run. And pitcher Alex Bookman drove in 2 runs with a Double off the wall and a Sac Fly to help his own cause.

The Pride play back to back games against Desert Ridge this week - Tuesday April 4th on the road and Thursday April 6th at home.

MAR 03 2017
Mesa Mountain View 2 - Mountain Pointe 0
WP: Neeley
LP: Bookman (0-2)

The Pride Baseball Team lost a 2-0 pitchers duel to Mesa Mountain View on Friday.

Three different Mountain View pitchers combined to allow just 2 hits to a hot Mountain Pointe offense, that tallied 12 hits against Desert Mountain just 2 days before. A single by Carson Tucker in the 1st, and another by Alex Bookman in the 2nd were the loan sparks of offense. Short Stop Johnny Weaver reached on a Fielders Choice in the 4th inning, and stole a base - but the Pride never had a runner passed 2nd base all game as the pitching of Mountain View dominated the game and shut them out.

Senior Starting Pitcher Alex Bookman (0-2) suffered the tough luck loss, allowing just 1 ER in 5 Innings of work. Sophomore Ryan Aslamy pitched two quality innings in relief to keep the Pride in the ballgame, and Senior Jayden Brooks made a sensational throw to the plate from Center Field to cut down a run and keep it close. But it was not enough on this day, as the Pride lost their 2nd straight game to drop to 2-2 on the season.

Next up for the Pride will be the Boras Baseball Classic, beginning on Wednesday March 8.

Mountain Pointe 5 - Boulder Creek 2
WP: Polich (1-0)
LP: Baptist

The highly anticipated Season Opener proved to be an exciting one, as Mountain Pointe came from behind late to win an extra inning thriller over Boulder Creek.

Alex Bookman got the Opening Day nod for the Pride, and worked efficiently in his first start. Despite giving up a leadoff Home Run, Bookman settled in to throw 6-1/3 Inn, allowing just that 1 ER on just 80 pitches. The Senior Right Hander commanded the zone all night, allowing just 1 BB and 4 Hits, before existing the ballgame in a 2-2 tie in the 7th inning. Senior Southpaw Cameron Polich entered in a tough spot, with the middle of the order coming to bat and the winning run on 2nd base with just 1 out in the 7th. Polich retired all 5 hitters he faced in relief in the 7th and 8th innings, 3 via the strikeout, to hold the Jaguars at 2 runs and help his team earn the victory.

On offense, the Pride hitters found themselves in a tough opening day battle with the big hard throwing right hander from Boulder Creek. Knowing that a big inning would be hard to come by, Mountain Pointe used some timely situational hitting and team speed to edge a difficult opponent. Down by 1 in the 3rd, Kalani Klepfer got the Pride offense going when he reached first on an infield single, stole 2nd base, took 3rd on a Wild Pitch. Klepfer then scored on a Johnny Weaver RBI Single to tie the game. Then in the 5th, trailing now 2-1, Senior OF Kobe Krol lead off with a hustle double, and came around to score on consecutive advancing ground balls by Jayden Brooks and Carson Tucker. The game remained tied at 2 into the 8th inning, when Jayden Brooks lead off the inning with a walk, and reached 3rd on a hit-and-run single by Weaver. Teammate Logan White delivered the biggest hit of the day with his 1 out go-ahead single that helped lead to the 3 run 8th inning and an Opening Day Mountain Pointe Victory.

Mountain Pointe plays next at home on Tuesday Feb 28 against Westwood.
