The text of The Stavanger to Bergen Nattrute is now available as a book from:
Go to the main 'Books' page on the Lulu site, enter MIKE BENT in the 'Search' box at the top of the page, and you will have access to details of all seven of my works (three histories of Norwegian shipping services and four novels) published to date.
If you happened on this website by chance, and not via a link from one of my other websites, here is some information about the latter:
This is the digital version of my 1987 book Coastal Express - The Ferry to the Top of the World, which is the definitive history in English of the world-famous Hurtigrute service between Bergen and Kirkenes. The beauty of a website which one publishes oneself is that there is no limitation on text length, so this is the full manuscript version, nearly twice as long as that which became the book. I also bring the story up to date, from the mid-1980s onwards. There are many previously unpublished tables, and several continuously-evolving illustration galleries, including some featuring my own sketches and steamer profiles Please also note the three photo galleries listed at the bottom of this page!
The Hurtigrute fleet list, with full colour profiles of virtually all the ships used on the service up to 1987 (and data only on the latest generation of vessels), is at long last published, since I now have an A3 scanner, capable of recording digitally the A3 size profiles I drew for Coastal Express in the mid-1980s. Please go to:
This is a website which takes you into my escapist world of (semi-) fiction - four novels with action taking place in various parts of Europe including northern Spain, Norway and Poland. Two are historical in nature, two are set in the present day. Lovers of ships, trains, classical music, intellectual heroines, industrial archaeology and unspoilt natural landscapes will not be disappointed. Aficcionados of chic-fic, lad-lit and political correctness will probably want to exterminate me . . .
More websites are in preparation, the next themes to be tackled being the history of Venezia's public transport system (vaporetti, of course) and a digital version of my 1989 book Steamers of the Fjords, which examines the history of local shipping services in the Bergen district. Details will be posted here as and when pages come on stream.
And finally, a reminder that the three photo galleries listed at the bottom of this page are really an 'overflow' from the Coastal Express website, and take you on a trip up the Norwegian coast and to Svalbard in 1974/5.
