There I was, standing in second grade lunch watching perhaps the most chaotic time of day aside from recess and PE (yes I threw myself under the bus). I glance over and see a table with three boys sitting side-by-side and not speaking to each other or anybody else. I look harder at who it is. Three boys that are often being redirected for misbehavior in class are just sitting there. Not talking to anybody. Is this one of the problems? They feel disconnected from everybody in class even each other. They don’t feel a sense of community or connection with those in their class which is why they are able to yell at, call names, and otherwise be discourteous to others.
Where are we falling short with these boys? How do we get them reengaged in the classroom community and in school as a whole? These boys are only seven or eight and they are already becoming disengaged and disenchanted with what school has to offer both mentally and socially.
Are we going to get them back and thriving over the next ten years? Or are we going to go to battle day-after-day and chalk them up as a victim of “circumstances out of our control”?
