We were expecting twin girl births within 24 hours. We were held up in the hospital room-no toys, no iPad. My three-year-old son and I sat in the room keeping mommy company. There it was…our next game. All we needed was that Styrofoam cup. So Hayden (my son) grabbed it. First he started throwing it around the room. Then he found out he could hit it in the air with his hand. Then he discovered he could hit it over and over again and keep it in the air. One hit then the floor. Two hits then the floor. Four hits then the floor. Back to one hit. Then four again.
“Daddy, you count my hits”.
“One…One, two…One, two, three, four…”
“See if I can get to five!”
Five never came. But you know who was focused for ten minutes on smacking a cup in the air to reach a self-selected goal? My three year old son.
Takeaways?
