It happens. It’s that moment when you feel you’re losing what little control you ask for and then your mouth opens and spouts off. As soon as your mouth closes you think to yourself, “Really? That was the best tool you had for that situation?”
I could’ve used a rhythmic clap to get their attention. I could’ve used a call-and-response---my favorite is “Hold up!”(me) “Wait a minute!”(students). Instead, I used a loud, barely recognizable sound that brought the attention to me. Then I poorly worded my scold to the tune of ‘why can the kindergarten students get set and ready in less time than my second graders?’…what a clown (me, not them).
I have better tools in my arsenal. Better believe I will be more cognizant and take a breath when the situation arises again.
