NEW ORLEANS, La. - On Saturday, July 21, The Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale kicked off the 2019 Carnival season with its annualReveal Party at Crystal Palace Reception Hall in Harvey, La. Along with its theme, Queen-Select, and floats, the Krewe announced two native daughters as its grand marshals - Grammy Award winner Irma Thomas and Gina Charbonnet, executive producer of the Essence Festival's Empowerment Programming.

"I am over the moon that I have been chosen by this great black women's Mardi Gras organization," said Charbonnet. "Just think, last year I attended the Femme Fatale float reveal event with my sister and now I am the 2019 Grand Marshal. I am so excited and looking forward to this experience and opportunity."

Thomas, who sent her remarks via video, echoed Charbonnet's sentiments stating that she too was honored to be chosen.

Of course, the most anticipated moment of the evening was the announcement of the 2019 MKFF Queen-Select. In keeping with the 2019 theme, "MKFF Presents Story Time," queen candidates were asked to read a storybook. The book with the crown inside indicated the winner and that was Ms. Pamela Prout-Foxworth, a 20-year employee of the City of New Orleans. Upon discovering that she was the winner, Prout-Foxworth immediately fell to her knees.

"I was nervous, anxious and excited as I flipped through the book, scanning each page as fast as I could till I got to the back, where I saw the crown," said Prout-Foxworth. "There were so many different emotions happening inside of me all at once. I was humbled and moved that I was picked. I was moved by the love and support I could hear and feel from the cheers from our group. With all of these amazing feelings, I literally lost my balance and landed on my knees, where I got to thank God for my journey."

Prout-Foxworth, a five-year member of MKFF, grew up in the 9th Ward and graduated from George Washington Carver High School. She attended Southern University at New Orleans, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration, and is also a licensed realtor in the state of Louisiana. She works as a project manager for the City and, in her spare time, Pamela is actively engaged in organizations that empower, inform and motivate girls and women, such as Ladies Who Lunch and Support, and Friends Helping Friends. She is an avid reader and loves to travel to experience other cultures.

"As a five-year member, Pamela embodies the commitment to community that is a part of our mission," said Founding Member Sharlayne Jackson Prevost, who currently serves as interim president. "The Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale is happy to have her as the 2019 Queen-Select and we look forward to her reign."

The 2019 parade, the Krewe's fifth annual ride, will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at 11 a.m., along the traditional Uptown route. It will feature floats reflecting a variety of popular storybooks, such as childhood favorites Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book, Pinocchio, and Winnie the Pooh.

Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale kicks off Carnival 2018 with annual Reveal

MKFF will celebrate its fifth year as a krewe

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale recently kicked off its 2018 Carnival season announcing its theme, Queen-Select, Grand Marshal, and new gala venue at its annual Reveal party, July 22, featuring national recording artist Mystikal, at Crystal Palace Reception Hall in Harvey, La.

Founded in 2013, the event also marked the group’s upcoming fifth year as a krewe.

“I can’t believe we’re coming up on five years already,” said President and Founder Gwendolyn V. Rainey. “We have worked really hard to reach this milestone and I’m excited to know that we are making an impact in this community that is much more than one parade, one day, once a year.”

The most anticipated moment of the evening was the announcement of the 2018 MKFF Queen-Select when Mossville, Louisiana native Kimberly Prater McPherson was officially named. McPherson was inducted into MKFF in 2015 and served as a parade marshal for the krewe’s inaugural ride. She is a graduate of Sulphur (LA) High School and attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La., where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics. She also holds a Master of Social Work from Southern University at New Orleans (2006).

Following graduation, McPherson moved to New Orleans in 1991 and has been employed by the State of Louisiana for over 25 years with the Department of Children and Family Services. She is a child welfare consultant and has worked with foster care children.

“I fell in love with New Orleans over 25 years ago,” says McPherson. “The community, culture, history, and oneness displayed by this unique city have always resonated with me. The opportunity to represent the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale speaks to all that lured me here.”

McPherson is married to Isaac McPherson, Jr., and they have four children, J’Nae, Jordan, Landen, and Kelsey. She attends Franklin Avenue Baptist Church and serves in the Children’s Ministry. She is also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

MKFF will host its annual gala at a new venue the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on Friday, February 2, 2018, featuring national recording artist and New Orleans native Ledisi, along with local artist Rochelle Cook and music by DJ Polo504. Radio personality Dino Hanson of KMEZ Old School 106.7 FM and MKFF’s own Patrice Hopkins will serve as master and mistress of ceremonies, respectively.

The 2018 theme, ‘MKFF Takes Broadway,’ will feature floats reflecting a variety of Broadway productions. Leading the annual procession will be Grand Marshal Janee Michelle, also known as Gee Tucker, a New Orleans native, actress, model, dancer and businesswoman who reigned as a Mardi Gras queen in 1977. The ladies will bring Broadway to the streets of New Orleans for its fourth annual parade on Sunday, February 4, 2018, at 11 a.m., along the traditional Uptown route. The coveted signature mirrored compact will be the featured throw, along with an assortment of new throws and plush toys, annual theme beads, and footballs as the National Football League Super Bowl game will be played later that day.
