R/V Melville left San Diego at 0800 with 14 in the science party ready to make some exciting measurements of mixing over topography. These included physical oceanographers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Oregon State University, CISESE, University of Michigan, University of Alaska Fairbanks and volunteers including two high school students from Lincoln High School.

Seas were expected to be big on our way north, however the sun was shining and we tested our CTD with LADCPs attached as well as the acoustic releases. Josh Manger (restech), Felipe Gomez, Paul Chua and Michael Fuentes help make the first CTD cast (photo: J. Franco).
