Scarecrow Bill

Stringybark Farm
Block 3 by Missymack

Finished size: 6x6"

Materials needed: Cream Homespun, assorted scraps of fabric for borders, embroidery threads, colouring pencils, general sewing supplies

Firstly, cut a 4.5 x 4.5" square of cream homespun. Then from your assorted scraps, cut the following: two 4.5x1" strips, four 5.5x1" strips, and two 6.5x1" strips.

Sew a 4.5x1" strip to either side of the cream square. Press flat. Then sew a 5.5x1" stip to the top and bottom of the block. Press flat. Repeat the process again, with a 5.5x1" strip sewn either side of the block, and the last two 6.5x1" strips to the top and bottom. Press flat.

Download the stitchery template from the attachment below and print it off. Using a lightbox or window, trace the design onto your block using a sharp 2B pencil, or a fine pigma pen.

Once the design is fully traced, it's time to colour in! I have used the Prismacolour Premier pencils for this block, as they are heat set and water resistant. I have used the following colours:
Red for the jumper; orange for the pumpkins and carrots; dark blue for teh hat; pale beige for the face; brown for the stick, stalks and signpost; light green for the leaves and cabbages.

Then using two strands of matching coloured thread, backstitch around the design outlines. Use brown thread and work two french knots for Bills eyes, and backstitch his smile. Work the straw in yellow. Press well once complete.
