Attendance and Tardiness

Attendance
Students are expected to attend every class session absent exigent circumstance.  Attendance for those taking this course is highly important because discussion groups and in-class assignments will be assessed throughout the sessions.  The student is expected to attend all classes and actively participate in class discussions.  Because of this, students must complete the assigned readings and assignments prior to the scheduled class meeting to contribute to meaningful class discussions.  It is the responsibility of the student to monitor their absences.

Attendance is mandatory and will be recorded.  Excused / Unexcused absences will be recorded as follows:
  • Students Professionalism Grade will be deducted 5 points each time the student is absent (whether excused or unexcused).
  • Students must provide adequate documentation of an excused / approved absence prior to the absence OR within one week of the absence occurring in order for it to be excused.
  • Quizzes missed as a result of Approved or Excused Absences will not count against students Quiz grade category.  Quizzes missed as a result of an Unexcused absence will be recorded with a grade of zero.
  • Please see additional information below for clarification on the definitions of Approved / Excused / and Unexcused Absences.
    • Approved Absences
Defined:  Scheduled, college-approved events that require students to miss class. Examples include: conferences, IT/Infosec professional development, musical performances, academic conferences, class field trips, athletic competitions, and class-required attendance at special campus events.
    • Excused Absences
Defined:  Unexpected events that result in missed classes. Examples may include (but are not limited to): significant illness or injury, death in the immediate family, doctor's appointments and severe weather conditions.
    • Unexcused Absences
Defined:  Absences which are not "approved" or "excused" shall be considered unexcused.
Tardy Policy
  • Students who are more than 20 minutes late to a class will be given an unexcused absence for that class period.
  • If the instructor is tardy to a class, students must wait 20 minutes.  If the instructor has not arrived after 20 minutes, class will automatically be dismissed.

Inclement Weather
In the event of inclement weather, students will be referred to Blackboard in order to gain information about class assignments and projects.  In addition (if requested), classes may still be held remotely using Blackboard Collaborate as the venue.  The instructor will provide additional information and Blackboard Collaborate will be tested before being utilized for scheduled class times.
