- Meet Misako Ishimura - On April 28th, 2017, during the FIPS-Mouche (International Federations of Fly Fishing Sport) Assembly, Misako Ishimura is Chair of World Fly Fishing of Japan (WFFJ) WFFJ is the CIPS Federation club in Japan, and help Japanese anglers to connect the other anglers internationally. WFFJ is contributing to informing about Japanese Angling, such as tenkara, to worldwide. Fly Fishing Team Japan is formed by the members of WFFJ. Misako Ishimura is the chair of WFFJ and the captain of Fly Fishing Team Japan. She contributes to connecting women anglers internationally as the Good Will Ambassador of International Women Fly Fishers. She learned fly fishing from Joan Wulff, Jiri Klima, Pablo Castro, Andy Murray, Lee Davidson, Mary Dette, Poul Jorgensen, Hisao Ishigaki, and other many anglers internationally to refine her skills. Since 2000, she has been teaching and demonstrating fly fishing, fly casting, and fly tying worldwide. Misako Ishimura is a fly fishing instructor and a painter/illustrator. She promotes fly fishing because of her belief in the spiritual benefits offered by the nature surrounding the fish. Misako started "Trout in the Classroom (TIC)" with Mrs. Joan Stoliar in late 1996 while they were members of the Conservation Committee of Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers. Her belief was strengthened by this experience as she saw that the TIC program benefitted everyone.  In her Power Point presentation, she explains how the TIC program began and worked. It introduces how the participants taught students about the environment surrounding the water in the wild natural setting and it exposes the effects of the program on the classes, the teachers, and society in general. Now she volunteers for the programs, which are mostly introducing fly fishing for children and their parents, disabled veterans, cancer patients, and elderly persons, sharing the joy of fly fishing and/or tenkara outdoor. She is a life member of the Fly Fishers International(former International Federation of Fly Fishers), Trout Limited, Friends of the White Rivers, and North Arkansas Fly Fishers. She is a Goodwill Ambassador of International Women Fly Fishers, a member of Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers, the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild, and Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum.  Misako Ishimura collected exhibition items for "Made in Japan" at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum Misako Ishimura began to fly fishing in the Catskill Mountains, living in Roscoe, New York. Beaverkill River and Willowemac River became her home water. She collected items for "Made in Japan" exhibitions at the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum. She added a tenkara workshop to the exhibition, invited Hisao Ishigaki, and introduced tenkara -"East meets West" on May 23, 2009. Tenkara spread from then on. She has been fishing in various rivers and still waters worldwide. Her experience and interest in fly fishing allowed her to become a practical fisher, adapting to any kind of fishing situation, including attendance to FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship and Conservation Symposium as an angler and a captain of Fly Fishing Team Japan. Misako Ishimura has become a global fly fisher, who cares about the fish and the quality of water. It was 1997 when she fished as a Fly Fishing Team Japan Anglers first time. She fished during the 17th Annual FIPS World Fly Fishing Championship and Conservation Symposium, which was held in Jackson Hole, Wyoming,   Marching to the Opening Ceremony during FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship  FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship Closing Ceremony in 2003.  Misako Ishimura is a contributor of Tenkara Radically Simple, Ultralight Fly Fishing, with Kevin C Kelleher. It was the first book in the world written in English dealing with Japanese traditional fly fishing (tenkara) for some years. Misako holds Tenkara workshop. She presents the history of tenkara and explain how it has been practiced in Japan and gives its characteristics. After seeing her power point presentation, you will know who practiced it and for what reasons, why it lasted such a long time and why tenkara uses only one fly. She demonstrates several ways to cast the tenkara rod, how to present the tenkara fly and land the fish, and teaches tenkara fly tying. Japanese Old Flies on May 18, 2019 Celebrate 10 Years of Made in Japan Misako made a presentation about old Japanese old flies. She introduced Kabari, Kebari, and Tenkara Flies. The Japanese Little Stream Workshop on May 19, 2018 Misako Ishimura invited Japanese fly fishers to the Catskills. They presented the power point presentation introducing Japanese Little Streams, tributaries of Ohi River. Their conservation effort to keep the native fish, Yamato Iwana and Amago in their streams were reported at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum. Afternoon, one of Japanese Tenkara fisher demonstrated tying his tenkara fly by his hands and mouth only, without a vise. Even it started to rain, they showed us how to cast tenkara. All attendees were asking many questions and it became a very interactive workshop. Tenkara History and Rod Casting Workshop at It was held as a part of Fly Fishers International ( FFI former IFFF), in Livingston, Montana, from August 1 to August 5, 2017. Misako Ishimura did the presentation of Japanese Tenkara Fishing and Tenkara Fly Casting. At the fair, she was the future fly tyer. Misako did the book sining there, too. The 5th Annual European Tenkara Convention From Sat. June 24 to Sun. June 25, 2017, there was the 5th European Tenkara Convention at the Camping Val Tramoontina in Tramonti di Sotto in Italy. Misako Ishimura will do the brief tenkara history presentation and the tenkara casting workshop. This workshop was held by the help of Friuli ASD. On the tenkara day, May 20, 2017, after the Lecture of the History of Japanese Fly Fishing Tenkara Rods, from 1:00pm, Misako will do the free Casting workshop for the all the level of fishers on the loan near the pond at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor, New York, USA for the public. History of Japanese Fly Fishing including Tenkara Rods in Japan Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum will host a program, “History of Japanese Fly Fishing Rods(including tenkara rod)” on Sat. 5/20/2017. In the morning, Misako Ishimura presented the History of Japanese Fly Fishing Rods, attributing toMr. Mihyoshi Shiozawa, who is the chairman of Tenryu Co., Ltd. (www.tenryu.com/worldwide.htm), andthe director of NPO WATERSIDE BASIS SOCIETY. He has been designed and produced various fishing rods over 70 years. The most recent his designed rod is tenkara rod called Furaibo(TF-39TA). It is the most modern rod and has gained attention from the fishing industry around the world. Misako is a fly casting instructor certified by the International Federation of Fly Fishers. She casts from a tenkara rod to a two handed rod in the various casting styles. Her motto is fly fishing the easy way. She concentrates on reducing physical stress for the caster to produce enjoyable and a relaxed experience. IFFF Southern Council Fair 2015 From 4:00 pm, on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, as a part of the IFFF Southern Council Fair, Misako presented TENKARA FROM JAPAN, which is about the history of tenkara and two tenkara fishers. One of them is Mr. Shigeo Yamada. You will see him in action catching Iwana, Japanese trout in the mountain streams of Torikabutoyama in DVD, which was made in 1979. Misako challenged WAPSI FLY TYING CONTEST and win the first prize of naming the fly. the International Federation Fly Fishers Misako was at Fly Fishing Fair hosted by the International Federation Fly Fishers, from 8/13/2015 - 8/15/2015 in Bend, Oregon USA. Misako led the tenkara workshop during the Festival of International Women Fly Fishers, which will be held from May 16 to Boiling Springs, PA May 18, 2013. Tenkara Summit 2013 in USA Misako Ishimura had the table at Tenkara Summit 2013 at the Holiday Inn on Market St., Harrisonburg, VA on May 11 and May 12, 2013. She will demonstrate tenkara fly tying at there and have an Authors Table with Mr. Kevin C. Kelleher. We will sign togather in the book "tenkara - Radically Simple, Ultralight Fly Fishing."  Misako Ishimura held her workshop tenkara on April 19th and tied flies at her table on April 20th, during East Idaho Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Expo in Idaho Falls, ID. Her tenkara workshop was explained why tenkara use one fly well. At the end of workshop, she held tenkara casting clinic outside. She enjoyed seeing her fly fishing friends in the West.
