2014 State Championships : Results

The Victorian State championships for the Mirror class were sailed across the weekend of 21/22 June on Melbourne's Albert Park Lake.  Andy McIntyre and 7 year old son Angus McIntyre from Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron sailed the bermuda rigged Prime Time to finish first overall with wins in 5 of the 7 heats.

The State titles were sailed in conjunction with the annual Albert Sailing Club Winter Regatta, and followed a short race format with races of 25 to 40 minutes. There were nine Mirror entrants. On day one honours were shared by Prime Time, Bob, and Jabiru with each taking a heat win. On day two Prime Time had a clean sweep of the four races to runaway with the overall win and the State Champions trophy. Nick Ede and wife Anna from Somers Yacht Club  sailed 'Bob', Anita Scott Murphy's national champion boat, to finish second overall. Third overall and first classic gaff-rigged Mirror was taken out by class and Albert 'grand master Rod Thomas with junior crew Aaron Caddaye sailing Lesley Scott's Jabiru. Rod and Andy McIntyre competed against each other in Mirror nationals titles in the 1980's and 1990's, when Andy sailed from Balmoral Sailing Club in Sydney, and Rod from Albert Sailing Club in Melbourne.

Lucy Ede and Taylor Poon from Somers  showed promise for the future finishing third in the final heat and taking out the Junior skipper/crew trophy. Maree Fitzpatrick from Williamstown with crew Susan Hextell from Gosford Sailing Club took out the Ladies trophy.

The Australian Mirror Championships will be sailed from Somers Yacht Club on Westernport around 60 kilometres south of Melbourne from 28 to 31 December 2014.

Victorian Team Wins the 2013/14 Mirror Nationals

A last minute decision to enter the 2013/14 Mirror Nationals in Sydney has paid dividends, with the Victorian team of Anita and Ben sailing 'Bob' winning the Nationals with a race to spare.  The Halse family also made the trip to Sydney to help fly the Victorian flag amongst a pretty hot fleet of NSW and Tasmanian crews.

In a close tussle for second, another family team (this time father / son) Mark and Hugh Phillips from NSW sailing “Sponge Bob Square Boat” took out second place overall, after a close final heat with eventual third place boat, Tara Foster and Celia May in “Jazze” (also from NSW).  Mark is also the class boatbuilder in Australia, with his Dinghy Sports hulls filling the first four places.
